I really wish they hadn't done that. I specifically bought this because it said it allowed idle play. I just wanted to let my dude fish idle as a nice background screen, choosing upgrades and new rods etc. "Chill".
Nope, won't get the achievements unless I do it "active". Too late to refund now, but all puns aside it feels like a bait and switch. Not the game I thought it was.
Because it states on the store page that it's able to be played either way. As well, there are a tonne of idle games out there with achievements, they're not mutually exclusive.
It can bring me 9/10'ths? No it can't. I'm at 16% achievements right now, and won't get much more unless I go active.
Insanity? Hyperbole.
I like a helpful idle mechanic for if maybe I'm playing between tasks cause I've got other crap to do during the day so maybe I can't sit for 4 hours straight or whatever and play actively so a little idle progression is very nice for when I have to get up and do something else for a bit, but if I bought a game to play then like... I'm expecting to actually play it yanno.... lmao
So yeah to ME it makes sense for games (even if they're idle-heavy) to have achievements that require you to actually play the game to get lmao
Pretty sure the devs never said you'd be able to 100% the game + all achievements with idling... just that it HAS idling... But I digress lol
But yeah you can 100% bait a a legendary fish and quickly switch to idle mode if you really wanna
I don't bother with that though myself cause I actually enjoy playing the game lmao
First thing, here's the description from the store page:
"Cast n Chill is a cozy idle (and active) fishing game"
Idle comes first, followed by active in brackets. I foolishly thought words meant things. :)
It's all good, but yeah I thought the game was more idle leaning. The horror.
Regarding playing the game, that's the thing. For a fishing game the fishing isn't so great. Fish does a little spazz animation and somehow just shakes off the hook, like that's a thing fish do. Then a couple seconds later it can do it again, and again. Even tiny fish grab the hook and go offscreen with it, constantly doing their little spazz like fish have infinite stamina.
I used to do a lot of fishing, they really don't. They get tired, and then you can pretty much just reel them in. The challenge is keeping the line taught and your pole with the right arc so the line doesn't snap. Realistically you use higher test line than what you're fishing, so that really doesn't happen unless you're going for huge fish (and let the line go slack). So yeah, you fight them for a while, they get tired and you reel, they fight, they get tired, and you finally reel them in. The fish in this game are apparently on crack and muscle relaxers.
All that said, I enjoy it for what I bought it for. Mostly idle with a smattering of active play, beautiful scenery, chill vibes and catching ling cod and coho, trout and chinook etc. like I did when I was a kid here in BC Canada.
I also find that the actual fishing mechanics can be occasionally a little bit silly for what is supposed to be a "chill" game, or at least with maybe where one or two of the legendaries are concerned, but overall I actually kind of like the gameplay. Of course as you stated real fish don't act like that (man I really wanna go fishing fr sometime. Soon....) so coming at it from that angle I'm sure the gameplay would feel jarring. I just personally don't have a problem with it but hey, totally valid you'd feel that way!
Legendary are just really big versions of the fish. Not sure how many per area etc. If you're targeting the legendary fish it's best to use a specific rod and lure, not let the idle guy pick. For regular fishing idle guy does a reasonable job of picking the right gear.
