[MOD] Chip's Challenge 1 Windows Graphics with CC2 Edits
This mod not only replaces all Chip's Challenge 1 tiles with their Windows counterparts, but I've also tweaked the Chip's Challenge 2 tiles to match, giving the game a much more unified appearance. More specific change notes after the download link.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8nlv3lDIlkPUXpnY3pqb1RSZzA/view?usp=sharing

Download the file and place it in C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Chip's Challenge 2\data\bmp (The exact file path may vary depending on where you installed Steam, but you get the idea.) You may want to back up your original chips2.bmp first.

Chip's Challenge 1 Graphics
  • Replaced as many tiles as possible with those from the Windows tileset (found at http://chipschallenge.wikia.com/wiki/Tile )
  • Removed gray cross-hatching from many tiles, such as blocks and dirt, since it would blur when the screen scrolls and look really ugly.
  • Created a new graphic for the disabled trap (Windows used the same graphic for active vs. disabled, but Steam allows for two different graphics).

Chip's Challenge 2 Graphics
  • Created new sprites for Melinda to match Chip, using her design from the Steam graphics as a reference.
  • Simplified many graphics for tiles new to CC2, either removing detail or converting them to a 16-color palette, to make them match the CC1 Windows graphics. I didn't bother to give every graphic this treatment, but most of them.
  • For new tiles that are just palette swaps of CC1 tiles, such as the yellow tanks, I just copied them over and recolored them.

Anomalies
  • Some tiles that were animated for Steam will no longer animate, but a few still do.
  • The movement of Walkers and Blobs is slightly choppier than other objects, since under the Steam tileset they moved via a "stretching" animation.
  • Teeth have no graphic for facing up, and will face down while moving up.
  • In the first level of CC2 the hint tiles state that the red thief steals items, and the blue thief steals keys. I kept the item thief from CC1 his original cyan color, and colored the key thief red, so their colors are now opposite what the hint tiles state.
  • A couple graphics, such as the "burnt Chip" from walking into a fire, can't be implemented since the Steam version doesn't use them.

If you run into any errors or anything looks wrong in-game, let me know.

Enjoy!

UPDATES
6/2: Fixed letter edges that got cropped off.
5/31: Fixed color of turquoise blocks and a few other objects.

You can also upload images and video to Steam to show of your mod ;)

Excellent work! Makes the game feel great again...though I've found few discrepancies I thought I'd share.
When pushing a dirt block into water, for a second, you can see Chip's drowning tile pop up: http://i.imgur.com/uu9HEHd.png
Also the blue blocks look odd: http://i.imgur.com/kLuSX31.png
Nothing else so far, but again, just thought I should share them.
Edit: Hm. Seems I posted in the wrong place. This is the CH2 page. Sorry 'bout that.

The splash when you push a block in the water and when Chip drowns use the same graphic, removing one would remove the other. Since it would make sense for a block to splash when it enters the water, I think it looks fine as-is even though it's not how the original game functioned. There are a lot of little discrepancies like that that can't be fixed by sprite editing alone, unfortunately.

The blue blocks do look off-color, since I removed the gray cross-hatching from them, because it looked weird when the camera moved. I tried adjusting the blue color to compensate for the loss of gray, but I agree it still looks a bit weird. I'll play around with it a bit tomorrow and upload a new version if I decide to tweak it.

can you do a recolor of the classic chip to make him match the new version while still remaining retro-ish like you did interpreting Melinda?

Actually, I think this is a great idea! That way, we might be able to retain the character annimation.

no it won't retain, I'm asking for the classic chip who has no animation be recolored

Okay, I figured out why my colors for the turquoise blocks kept looking weird! The sprite sheet is saved as a 256 color bmp, which means the block's color (0R 128G 128B) gets altered into something more bluish. I've resaved the sheet as a 24-bit image, and took the opportunity to make a few other color corrections.

For me at least, my goal for doing this was to invoke the appearance of the old version as much as possible, and only use new colors or graphics for the new content. Same reason why I didn't recolor the shoe thief to match its description in CC2. Of course other people can do their own recolors if they want.
