Troubleshooting - top tips to get Chip's Challenge working
Here is a list of fixes in order of how many people send in help requests:

1) :CC1Chip: Chip Not Moving :CC1Chip:
Chip is now controlled with W, A, S and D on the keyboard not the arrow keys. This is because Chip's Challenge 2 needs six keys. Plus Chuck wanted to pay homage to John Romero. They've been friends since John contacted Chuck after playing Snake Byte for the Apple II.

2) :CC2Melinda: Black Screen :CC2Melinda:
This can be one of lots and lots of different bugs :CC2Dynamite:

Possible Solution A - The game loads, you can hear Chip moving about. But you can't see him doing anything. With some versions of Windows 8 or 10 the correct drivers are not installed. You can install them by doing this:

Try using WineD3D, it worked for me: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wined3d4win/
Just copy ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll into the game folder.

Possible Solution B - The loading Chip's Challenge you get the Error 'Chips2 MFC Application has stopped working' and crashes. The most likely cause is the saved game has become corrupt. You have to uninstall the game and stop cloud sharing by doing this:

Right click the game in your library and select "properties"

Go to the "Updates" tab and uncheck the box in the "Steam Cloud" section at the bottom.

Then go to the "Local Files" tab and select "Delete Local Game Content."

Then "Browse Local Files and delete any remaining Chip's Challenge data (this includes your save) WARNING: You may want to back this data up just in case it does not fix your problem.

Finally, reinstall the game and it should work.

3) :CC1Ant: Why Doesn't It Look Like The Original? :CC1Ant:
It does :B1: the first version was on the Atari Lynx and we use the look and feel from that. A few years later the Windows 3.1 version was created. You can change the theme from Original to Windows by doing the following:
  • Top Menu Bar - Edit
  • Preferences - Click
  • Theme Drop Down - Change from Original to Win
  • Click - OK

4) :CC1BlueTank: I've done everything above but it's still not working! :CC1BlueTank:
That totally sucks :steamsad: The underlying code is now nearly 30 years old. So if it's not working on your PC and you've not got access to another PC. You can try posting in this forum to see if any other players can help, but really all that's left is to ask Steam for a refund.
