I had an issue to start Google Earth VR (no response after starting the game) and tried to disable the USB device and use long cable earphones and some other funny attempts.
It started when i have let enabled the usb audio device and then physically removed all audio jacks from the PC. (not kidding - disabling a device didn't help) Then it started immediatelly. It crashes often, but it is another issue and not relevant to the problem with sounbd device.

Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 3
Intel Core i5 4590
EVGA GTX 1070 SC GAMING ACX 3.0
8GB DDR3
Win 7 Pro 64 SP1
You call this a fix? It worked fine before. Now it doesn't run at all and it's been in this pathetic state for how long? Embarrssing for Google. Shame. Shame. Shame..<flings human excriment onto devs>
Won't Google Earth VR work with the new Daydream VR headset for the pixel XL. What the heck? Google Play sends you to steam where steam says it's free to play and is installed but I don't see it when I start daydream listed anywhere. This is their Flagship best phone. It should work right away from Google Play! I paid $5 because steam said that you had to spend $5 to access any of the features in Steam. Still can't get it to work. In general Daydream with the VR headset for the pixel XL is awesome butthis program is a pain in the ass.
I've read through this entire thread and tried a number of things:
- updated drivers (nvidia 980ti)
- updated Vive firmware
- rebooted (multiple times)
- disabled audio devices (all of them)
- unplugged all USB devices I can (I still need a keyboard and mouse)

None of this did anything. Google Earth VR still silently fails. No indication of why it's bailing, just disappears. Other VR apps work fine.

This typifies my relationship with PC gaming - nothing is ever easy and when it is it feels like a miracle. I guess in the case of Google VR we get what we paid for. Unfortunate since I've heard this app is stellar :/
Update: I got it to work after a couple of hours of thrashing. For the sake of someone else who might still be banging their head against the wall I'll condense what I've read here along with what eventually worked for me since this thread seems to be stalled.

tl;dr version - I eventually reinstalled my nVidia drivers but did a custom (not express) installation and checked the "perform a clean install" box. After this it magically started working.

A full list of things to try:
  • Get the latest drivers (duh, everyone has tried this I'm sure), but also you can try a 'clean install' in the Custom Install for nVidia drivers. (this is what eventually worked for me)
  • There are known audio device issues. Some have reported simply disabling surround sound devices and enabling the Vive headset audio works. Others have reported you have to physically unplug everything except mouse+KB.
  • Check the application error logs. This won't fix anything, but might provide insight on what is not working (http://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/6-ways-to-open-event-viewer-in-windows-10.html)

Other things developers have implied might affect the app (but I've seen no confirmation of):
  • SLI might cause issues. You could disabled it and retry.
  • Installation location somehow might cause issues. Not sure how to fix this. Reinstall in the default location maybe?

The developers have expressed they know there are issues so keep an eye out for an update. As of Dec '16 they said 'look for an update in the coming month'.

I hope that helps.

Hey,

Just seeing if there is an ETA for this fix.

Thanks.
Yeah It's time to uninstall this one. Does not load maps, I just sit in darkness. Maybe next time.
Hello, is there any idea of the fix for this?
I've tried
  • -Unplugging headset
  • -Unplugging every USB device except kb+m
  • -Disabling all other audio devices except Vive
  • -Even went to BIOS to disable my soundcards
  • -Updated (and clean reinstalled) GPU drivers (970 with the latest drivers)
  • -Reinstalled and repaired with the vc_redist files
  • -Replugged Vive, restarted Steam, rebooted computer
And nothing helps. But seems like I have a different problem, because I can get it to start and even view the welcome tour perfectly, but outside of that no place loads. I can't take the other tours because the world is just unloaded blurry mess. I can check the places from the welcome tour but can't zoom or move outside of them.
I always get this message when starting: "Loading labels failed due to an unknown error. Restart and try again." http://i.imgur.com/D56pJ0B.png I've tried googling and searching here but seems like no one else has the same problem.

From what I've read, change the sound output to the vive. Then plug in headphones using the thing that dangles off the Vive.

Didn't work. Tried changing sound to Vive, disabling everything else, plugging different kinds of headphones and unplugging speakers, nothing changed.
have the same issue here.
the app doesn't run. crashes, no error message.
after many tries to resolve the issue of reseting in few mins with GE VR and other VR apps, i have just tried the last thing ... power supply.
Despite mu EVGA 1070 claims power 170w and my 550W power supply had more than double on both 12V lines, apparently the peaks were reseting the pc. So the trouble solved by power supply with single line 50+ Amps on 12 volts.

Still experiencing this issue. Did a clean Nvidia driver installation, formatted my PC, ect. It just 'ghost' boots. It says it's running, but there's nothing displayed.

Changing my default audio device fixed the problem for me. I was mirroring my audio to speakers and vive DAS before, which I guess causes Google Earth VR to crash on launch
