Game keeps crashing: Access Violation (code 0xc0000005)
Hello everyone,

I picked up Peggle Deluxe during the steam sale. I managed to play it for an hour or so, closed it, and now it won't open. It keeps giving me the access violation code.

I made sure my NVIDIA drivers were up to date, but that doesn't seem to have fixed the problem. Can someone help me out or know of a fix?

Here's the entire code failure message:

The first time I start the game it worked, when I closed it using the task manager (there wasn't another way) it didn't work anymore... Could someone help us?

I ran into the same issue. For some reason, this happens if you're running Steam in beta. Taking Steam out of beta fixed it for me..

same thing happens with other popcap games (plants vs. zombies)

if you can disable full-screen the problem should go away.
you have to modify the registry at least for plants vs. zombies since it wont load. it might be similar in peggle:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\SteamPopCap\PlantsVsZombies]
"ScreenMode"=dword:00000000
or
"ScreenMode"=dword:00000001

not sure which is full screen or windowed

Most PopCap games broke after the update yesterday. The update today didn't fix this issue. Here is a work-around until Steam decides that paying customers are imporant.

To reiterate: This IS NOT a PopCap problem. This is a Steam problem. Only Steam can fix it.

The work-around I've found that works: (thanks to Prophet)

... try to open the game in windowed mode
type "regedit" into the Windows run bar or the search bar that appears when you click on Start in Windows
then open:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SteamPopCap\PlantsVsZombies
double click to open the ScreenMode file and change ScreenMode to 0
exit the registry editor.

This is the ONLY thing I've found that continually works. If you want to play in full screen mode, you will have to open in windowed mode after changing the registry as detailed above, then open full screen mode, play, then change back to windowed mode before exiting. You will have to do this EVERY TIME or the game will crash. If you close the game on full screen mode, the next time you play it, it will crash.

I used the regedit fix and the game loaded enough to click play and then put in my name and then it just spun wheels on a black screen
