Why are new characters so weak?
Am I doing something wrong?
When Harley first joined my party her attacks did no damage at all, even after cranking up her physical attack and buying better attacks.
Her skills are also really weak compared to the rest of my characters, even though she was a higher level than them when I got her.

Same thing with Sherman, when I first got him in the fight with Appolonius his attacks did like 70 damage, while Fang's combo's were hitting for around 700 total.

Galdo however was only slightly weaker than the rest of my characters, and when I bought the extra combo point and some good attacks for him, he caught right up.

Why is this? Are these characters just weak?

The first two characters in the game are probably the strongest characters... so others will seem "weak" by comparison.

some chars you gota figure out how they fit into Harly is more or a magic buffer (such as her leech and ablity to move mana from mobs to teammates) Galdo is fast and more of a theif (stealing itums from mobs) such like that they catch up faster if you can add anything that raises WP+ some good grainding for it around whare u fought APP imo

Moving mana is useless for me though, since I've given both Fang and Tiara resonance abilities that replenish SP.
And if Galdo's main use is stealing, then he honestly only seems useful for completing quests.

wasnt saying its perfect but each has their own use for diffrent aspects i find her more as a buffer unit and she excells at earth magic while galdo is wind fang is fire and tiara is water ect ect galdo and tiara are both good at healing too i should also mention

Guess I should just spec my third character as a support then. The biggest problem is the lack of WP a new character has. Just got Ethel and she only got 150 WP to start with. Fang already had his physical attack at 7, and the rest of his stats were all at 4, save magic attack which was at 5.
Tiara had everything at at least 5.
Not to mention attacks and skills bought.

So then I farm some WP to make Ethel useful (wanted her in my party since she's a QT3.14), but that makes Fang and Tiara stronger as well.

I can't even imagine what it's like on NG+. When you finally get Ethel then, she must be absolutely worthless.

I know that, but they don't gain exp while they're not in your party right?
So if you finish the game with Ethel at level 40, she'll stay 40 until you reach her again in ng+, and at that point you'll be way stronger than her.

That's not what I'm talking about.
I'm talking about characters who are not in your party at all. Pippin for example, right after you go back in time. Learning doesn't help, because you haven't met him yet, so he can't earn exp.
Ethel is a character you get really late-game, so when you go through the game again, you'll have earned a lot of levels before you even meet her, and then she'll be seriously underleveled.

Learning only works when they're actually in your party.

i see what u mean i just assumed u didnt pickup learning i did that on my first playthrough like an ideot lol

I think most peoples party's consisit of ethel fang and tiara. I feel like they are the best party memebers hands down there's some decent ones. But ethel is a trump card esq character. If all else fails she can potentially save ya with her special move. She also has amazing ability's. Fang is just absurd and overpowered no if ands or buts. And tiara has great aoe skills which makes farming less of a chore.

Which ability of Ethel are you talking about?
I've found that her skills are really strong, especially freezing meteor and glacial spikes. Never used assasinate though, the fact that it can take multiple turns and isn't usable on bosses if something that put me off.

At least the "chores" had actual benefits/purpose.
Most other games' secret characters usually require pointless fetch quests/trash item collection.
