in Act II, I've verified this works with either Unarmed, his unremovable default gun, or the Shock Glove (so presumably any other provided weapon) selected.

if you give him a piece of armor, the "Y" vanishes.
as to why? i don't know! but after roughly 1 hour of trial and error, i dare to say, that's the reason.
that will be the next achievement ;-)
1. that screenshot is from one of the first real runs (the one I do first), and I assumed you wouldn't have spent the cash at that point.
2. no armour is linked to skills in any way in HK!
anyway, good job working that out; I bet it applies to other character's skills as well (they're probably attached to the character's built-in outfit or something)
