After all, what does Smartlink weaponry ACTUALLY do?
I've heard something about it increases accuracy
Some says less acc reduction over range
But none of these attrib. are listed in game and I see no difference when using them compared to an usual gun-- except the name sounds cooler

You hit enemies more often despite having the same stats?
That's pretty much what they've always done, might increase crit rate too, I dunno.

That's pretty much it. Better accuracy.

I've never noticed a significant difference between smartlink and normal guns. I usually don't bother wasting a cyberware slot on my non-decker/rigger characters, but if you've already got the implant might aswell use it.

If you're going to use rifles or pistols on any character you pretty much want a jack just for that. the implant is dirt cheap and only competes with the toxin exhaler for placing anyway. If you REALLY want a 10 damage with 4 DoT/2turns attack that much you can get induction pads for the hand or a cyber eye jack instead for twice the price, the hand jack has a lowered essence cost but that's pretty much it.

I'd love to have a character that actually uses pistols with a jack, but pistols really do take a ridiculous amount of focus, you'd pretty much need to be a dedicated pistol sam to have a good chance of killing stuff, since you *need* the high level abilities like double tap and chain shot.

It is the only weapon in the game that gets ranged disarm and free reloads though, so maybe I'll make a gunslinger someday.

I already have the perfect name picked out and everything...

I suppose that's another way of looking at it, there really isn't a significant drawback to having a datajack either.

Also, as for pistol samurais, I had one in Dragonfall named Roland. The damage felt really underwhelming compared to Rifles, besides maybe Chain Shot. Good for picking off a lot of low health enemies in a single turn though.

Much beter accuracy especially in full auto. difference is almost 10%
With smartlink you can achieve a 95% full auto hits.

Pistol is very good chainshot and burst (both 1 AP) beats the assault rifle damage per AP.
But full auto just is that full auto, without full auto the assault rifle and minigun is dead.
Pistol has more punch if you have 1 AP left over. but 2 AP simply means full auto :P.

The datajack drawback is that you use up 0.5 essence for the smartlink. unless you do it later on.
the it is 0.3 essence for the hand datalink.
If you take the datalink early on only biomorph able to fit into that socket is poison spit. (which I never used. sad waste of 0.5 essence.)

In the video game it modifies range penalties. In the source material it did a couple other things depending on whether you vision magnification and rangefinder link and also whether you had a rating 1 or a rating 2 smartlink. You should also be able to use it with goggles, instead of with cyberware (in which case it overlays a reticle on your HUD showing you where your gun is pointed).

Basically it's supposed to link the sensors in your gun to your consciousness, you know where it's pointing like it was another appendage, how much ammo is left, what firing mode it's in etc. Although I don't think it lets you see through your gun, i.e. you can't poke your gun around a corner to see what's there using the targeting camera.

Did you name the character Roland because of The Dark Tower books? Roland was immediatly the name that came to my head when a gunslinger character build was mentioned above. I have read those books at lest 3 times, and its one of my all-time favorite stories.

Considering that the tech to see through your gun exist today, I find that kind of odd. I mean, that would have probably been the first thing I'd have thought to add.

I Googled smartlink weapons, saw this thread
did not pay attention to the timestamps, whups :s

yeah I can understand that.

Smartlink weapons improve accuracy. its not very noticable at high stat and skill levels. at lower levels you notice the accuracy boost if you compare two equivalent weapons side by side.

not game ending but maybe 3% or so.

cost of the guns is prohibitive though, since they COST like 1000 more and money is tight. and for 1000 I could get some implants to my arms to improve ranged accuracy far more than 3%
