Never played Shadowrun before, is this game worth it?
I've played some of Pillars of Eternity, hoping this game is kind of like that? I enjoy a good RPG now and then, do you think I would like it?

It's similar insofar as other CRPGs are like each other. There's a lot of reading, a major focus on story over combat, plentiful character interaction, and (what I believe to be) overall better gameplay than Pillars. It's not as long, though, and the combat is like a simplified version of XCOM's.

It's definitely worth playing if you like CRPGs and cyberpunk science fantasy settings.

Play Dragonfall instead it is much better.

well, i would advice going for SR returns -> SR Dragonfall standalone -> SR HK
so far, Dragonfall seems a bit more absorbing thought - guess asian thing isnt that much for me.

I advise skipping Returns.

It's not bad, but man, it has some GLARING flaws.

Dragonfall is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ masterpiece, and Hong Kong is pretty good.

I am having a lot of fun with Hong Kong and there are a lot more builds available than the other games. It looks like it is definitely up to Dragonfall standards. Plus being able to enter combat mode whenever you want is freaking awesome and a vast improvement. There is a lot more story it seems.

I have only done 2 computer missions so far and now am on Is0bel's. That said right now there are enough bugs that I would either wait a week or two for patches or buy Dragonfall.

Dragonfall is incredible in its own right and well worth buying at full price and playing straight through. If you like replaying with different builds you will probably get even more time out of it. At full price you will get approximately a $1 an hour
of game time give or take. And it will be high quality.

At this point the original Shadowrun Returns is only worth it at like $3 or less. It gets bundled somewhat regularly at this point and can usually be counted on to be part of Summer and Winter sales. It is a very simple, linear story with few skill checks that matter and a very different interface and relationships with npcs. It's fun but not as good as the other 2.

It's OK. But you'd better try the previous game from this cycle: Shadowrun:Dragonfall

Play Shadowrun Returns (Dead Man's Switch) and Dragonfall, they are great games and much better than SR:HK. I'd skip this one.

It's possible that Shadowrun Returns suffered from Dragonfall evolutions, but no way it was full of bugs, lol. One point about that, try stick with the autosave and try not reload too much from other saves. Restart level option is also often a way to get out of troubles. Because it's the point if it has still glitches most if not all are related to free save which wasn't a part of its original design.

SRR has the game with the more style other than that, Dragonfall did everything better but SRR is an interesting game anyway.

SRHK firstly isn't any more a turn based game, be warned of that. The Matric gameplay is now including tedious/boring action minigames, and a real time stealth relatively fast which is a boredom if you aren't fan of simple action games.

Secondly the team tried make evolved the blueprint and lacked of key skills. Overall the team tried apply a design allowing more filling and that's very important technical for CRPG, but they obviously have not enough in that matter and sometimes it's ok and sometimes it's almost awful. Another example is they tried save design time on combats but the result is despite the combat system is probably a bit improved, the combats are in general much less good than all those of Dragonfall, and less good than combats in SRR.

Thirdly be also warned SRHK is rather special with an amount of reading which is in proportion quite bigger, Dragonfall and SRR have also a ton of reading but it's more balanced with other gameplay elements, combats, find some stuff, solve some simple tricks, few more. Eventually it won't be a default apart for replay quality, if you like read a lot, because the writing quality is quite good.

Wow, thanks for the long, thought out repsonses. Much appreciated and has helped me on my decision that i'm going to buy Dragonfall and play that.
Just a word of advice - do not go into this expecting some of the sprawling areas Pillars has. You could liken the level structure to something a lot like what the Deus Ex games use - you can go wherever you like within a certain area, but progressing the story takes you out of that area to another one and the first area will have changed somewhat by the time you return.

One thing that this game has that Pillars does not is...Pathing.
Isobel and her remote grenade launcher mines. Thats good enough for me to play SRHK.

This game has better writing than Pillars, but the gameplay is worse (note that I don't like the gameplay in Pillars, but it's better than the gameplay in this game).
