If you want to do anything fancy, like give Gobbet a sniper rifle, you'll need to purchase it.
Your crew gets better gear occasionally, but you could still improve on that. Most builds need the money for themselves mostly; nonetheless it might be nice to give them what you've got in store anyway. Mind their consumables auto-refresh while your's don't, so use their consumables 1st to save money.
Fair warning, though: Money is EXTREMELY tight in this campaign, so threat every purchase as it might be your last.
You do find some gear during some missions that do very well for some pcs
-The lightning sword you find in the archeological run one of the best swords for most of the game and if you aren't an adept or melee street sam, it's perfect for Gaichu or Duncun as an added option
-The rifle you find in the tower of the final run before the expansion is made for Gobbet
-There's a pistol you can grab in the wuxing quest with the right skill ratings that Isobel can use
