This one is the best one mechanically, but many people regard the second one (Dragonfall) as having the best story.

I agree with Requiem, although I think they are both fantastic either way.

yeah, dragonfall has to be my favourite, but hong kong is a close second

The best Shadowrun game, is yet to come. I really hope for it.

the objectively correct answer is "either one besides Returns" so hopefully the 3 pack will go on sale for $10 again soon

Dragonfall had a great balance between Story and Combat. Hong Kong is better mechanically (some folks dislike the HK's version of Matrix) and is more focused on the Story (aka More talking, less fighting). Both are great games.

none of them. Maybe Sega's one was all right for it's time.

Haven't played Returns in a long time
What's bad about it again ?
I only remember myself screaming in agony because I was trying to build an Ace of all trades chracter which unsuprisingly failed terribly

Dragonfall is better to start with, because it is awesome and also preserves the proper playing order.

The stories of DF & HK are independent but HK is still later down the timeline. More importantly DF is just fine in its mechanics but HK improves it further, thus you can play DF w/o missing anything but may still enjoy some "upgrades" in HK. If you do it the other way around you may see it as a downgrade, even if it is basically irrelevant since DF is perfectly fine in itself. DF's story is commonly considered better. Personally I've found it far better as well but that'll always be a matter of opinion.

As to Returns (or rather "Dead Man's Switch"): I'd say it isn't as bad as it is made out to be. Nonetheless it is clearly worse than its successors. The whole system, from the character generation onwards, is inferior. That's not the main point though. It is overall a lot less balanced, the level design is inferior and the main character / crew relation is non-existent (which is problematic for both story and gameplay). Overall its design is a lot less poilished not least in gameplay. I heard people say they'd have preferred the DMS story and atmosphere over DF's but that's the exception: Most people seem to consider DF's story the best of those three, which is also how I see it. Moreover Returns' story can be played as UGC with the HK system, so there is little reason to play the unpolished original even if you don't want to miss out on the story.

Compared the the others, it had a pretty weak story and no "permanent party" type of thing, iirc.

I've been playing through Returns, and figured that was just a stylistic choice. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but similar to Watch_Dogs 1 (hear me out please), an actual partner wouldn't make sense. I thought it was a neat twist that, instead of actually developing a party, you're drawing from a pool of "Fixers" (or in this case, mercenaries) using funds rather than any common cause.

I find that the issue people have with games like Dead Man's Switch and Watch_Dogs is that people just can't take a simple revenge story. Those games instead use a world drawn before-hand that they follow the logic of, while actually telling a story through that. The Count of Monté Cristo certainly has nothing to do with 19th century politics, even if it is the means by which the entire conflict begins, and I feel like a well-told personal/revenge story just tends to be underappreciated a lot of the time.

I mean, look at W_D 2 and tell me that's not the case... is the story really better? Not really. The only difference is that you're now expected to like the character instead of the flawed protagonist, and it's now about a bunch of hackers "taking down the system--" because personal stories just don't cut it anymore for one reason or another.

I recommend you to research this stuff because videogames can't emulate a real person (Game master) that shapes your story and reacts to your decisions. System is fairly complex, but when you take your time into it, oh boy.

As in every tabletop rpg, in campain you have multiple players, each has their own characters possibly with their own problems and subplots that everyone will have to deal with.

Shadowrun is the game that allows you to install a cyberdick that piss napalm, it all really goes down to GM. If you have an idea, bet your ass that you can create such a character since Shadowrun is classless system.

English isn't my main language so it's hard to me to tell much. Just know that system can be challenging but it's pays off.
