Edge certainly still has feelings for Rydia and Rydia is still as oblivious as ever. And honestly, I can't blame her. The problem here is Edge being too discreet. SPOILER ALERT!! Edge donated a large sum to Mist than he lets on, as implied by the Seneschal at the start of Rydia's Tale, and still donate anonymously on regular basis for 16 years, as said by an NPC at Eblan Castle. Edge also helped Rydia mend her relationship with Leviathan and Azura behind the scenes. Rydia only knows about Edge's role in it after Leviathan and Azura told her so. Their communication is just poor. Rydia can't be expected to read Edge's mind. He has to tell her.
I don't know why SE made Edge like this. Sure it's cute he's being shy and awkward around her in FF4. But after 16 years?! He should've grown out of it. I can't wrap my head around why can't he be forward with Rydia after all these years. He doesn't have a problem flirting with his female ninja colleague. Yet having such a hard time to even start courting Rydia.
Towards the end, Edge has a new excuse to visit Rydia regularly SPOILER ALERT!! to play with Rydia's adopted daughter. That's the only progress in their relationship. It doesn't really confirm anything canonically, but left to fans interpretation.
But anyway, Edge & Rydia is but one example of a tendency that many JRPG's seem to have of not openly bringing together any potential couple amongst the primary cast except the main one, as if doing so would somehow take away from the game and story instead of adding to it. I've never understood it and never liked it. The characters' development feels incomplete when such feelings of theirs are left unaddressed and forgotten by the devs. I don't think it would've taken anything away from IV, for example, if Edge had admitted to Rydia how he felt about her toward the end of the game and they both showed some growth and progression with each other in that regard.
As you said, it's unfortunate that deuteragonist romance often not explored further and badly written. It doesn't hurt to add a little bit of progression for Rydia and Edge's relationship during the course of the game. Besides, in TAY, everyone is already married or choose to be single like Edward because he still loves Anna. Ceodore doesn't have a love interest yet. So why not explore Rydia and Edge's relationship here. But nada. SE failed this couple big time.
Let's talk about all the reasons it can't happen.
1. Rydia has never shown ROMANTIC interest in Edge, she treats him as a friend like everyone else. She didn't come to fight with him against Ifrit because she loved but because she doesn't want anyone to die, Luka and Golbez help in that fight too once they catch up. There is literally a band attack in TAY called "Broken Heart" calling Edge a "scorned lover". In the band animation Edge literally confesses his feelings to Rydia and Rydia gives him a death stare of disapproval and then shoots him with a bow and arrow. The official IV guide books lists Edge in IV as unrequited love. As for the source of TAY Ultimania her 'feelings for Edge' grew, The After Years doesn't even have an Ultimania book from everywhere I checked.
2. The implication Rydia would fall in love with Edge for what? Asking Leviathan and Asura to visit her even though they already apologized to her in the lunar subterrane after being beaten. Or Rydia falling in love because Edge occasionally plays with Cuore? They have known each other for 17 years and Rydia has never taken kindly to his advances, at most this can cause Rydia to respect Edge a bit more, but that is it. For the record, back in IV days, people used to think Rydia would get together with Edge just because she didn't completely shun him at the end of IV during Cecil and Rosa's wedding.
3. The implications of marrying Edge would mean Rydia would have to become a full time queen. In the ending of TAY, Edge himself states he can't always sneak out of his kingdom as he is busy. If Rydia were to marry Edge, she'd have to leave Mist and would have way less time in her own life.
4. Rydia's entire biological clock is implied to be screwed up. In Interlude she is in the Feymarch for a normal Earth year since FFIV (longer than she spent in the Feymarch when she was a child) and she did not age at all. An Eidolon in the Feymarch even tells Rydia she could live in the Feymarch forever. Not to mention in TAY Rydia tells Palom that if she stays in the Feymarch for too long, he will "stop being in sync with the human world". Rydia it is implied she cannot age which would be kinda catastrophic for someone to marry and make a Queen.
5. Edge visiting Rydia between IV and TAY isn't even special, TAY Rydia explicitly states Cid visits her almost constantly in Mist, as well as Harley and Edward visiting to the point Rydia knew who Harley was by name. Also Edge donating money to Mist isn't even special since it is explicitly stated other kingdoms like Baron and Damcyan donate money to Mist. Also the fact Edge literally spies on Rydia without her consent so she wouldn't even know he is visiting her. In fact in TAY he is only seen by Rydia because Cuore caught him.
6. Edge himself hasn't developed that much from IV. He is slightly less arrogant, but still reckless as seen with leaping off the Tower of Babil or fighting Ifrit alone. As well as his general blow off nature like whenever he says "whatever" or "sure cool" whenever Seneschal or the Eblan Four try to talk to him. Not to mention Edge himself still flirts with women other than Rydia, he literally flirts with Izayoi when you first start up Edge's tale and later on makes misogynistic remarks to her when she asks to be treated as a "ninja before a woman". Not to mention Edge has spied on Rydia without her consent all while blowing off his own Kingly duties for 17 years, that is pretty creepy. Not to mention he literally has a smut magazine on his bed (the lustful lali-ho in Edge's tale is found on his bed).
7. Their entire dynamic, like Rydia has never shown romantic interest in Edge and has little reason to. Edge initially portrayed himself as an arrogant flirt with a reckless streak, and in TAY while his arrogance and recklessness toned down a bit it is still very much there and he is still very much a misogynist.
8. If they WANTED Edge and Rydia together they would have done more, like Leonora and Palom it is much more explicit by comparison. In addition, Rydia literally adopts a child by the end of TAY, not a child with Edge. If they really wanted to, they likely would've done more. Edge as seen in all other media is shown to have his feelings for Rydia treated as a joke, compared to Kain whose feelings for Rosa are a core part of his character. Rydia meanwhile in other media never even talks about Edge unless he is right there in front of her. By the way Edge is 43 in TAY. For reference, Cecil and Rosa were around their 20s when they got married.
9. Bonus, some people using the official novelization of TAY because it has some more Edge and Rydia scenes. This includes Edge saying he'd protect Rydia and having Gekkou knock her out with a punch or the ending scene having much more dialogue like Rydia telling Leviathan "people as kind like Edge are why I'll stay in the human world", and him initially confronting Asura in private for why she threw Rydia out years before TAY. And even still none of this explicitly or even implicitly confirms Rydia having romantic interest in Edge. Not to mention so many scenes in the book are changed or not in the game. You can argue the book has the same writer as TAY, but the official novelization for II had the same writer as the video game and it completely cuts out characters and plot points. Not to mention the guy who wrote TAY wrote the official novelization for IV which also changes things (He did not write for IV btw).
10. Rydia isn't even oblivious, she knows Edge likes her but she doesn't return those feelings. Rydia clearly knows what romantic love is, she even asks Luca in a camp scene about her feelings for Palom and how she feels with Palom being with Leonora, or Rydia understanding Cecil and Rosa's relationship. Again the Broken Heart band Edge literally confesses and Rydia looks pissed at him before shooting him.
And for a final note. Laguna and Raine had a mutual relationship. Unlike Edge, Laguna was honest and always did his best, with many of his jokes being more good natured than stand offish. And even still Laguna could not get Julia even though she also liked Laguna, because it wasn't practical. Edge's entire pursuit of Rydia started because he thought she was pretty, that is it. He still flirts around with other girls throughout and hasn't changed his sexist attitude.
Sorry for the long post but it is very tiresome with people think Edge x Rydia is canon when it is grasping at straws over TAY's ending, especially when people think Rydia even liked Edge more than a friend at all before that ending when the evidence says otherwise.
I don't think anyone pushed their headcanon as canon here. Rydia and Edge are clearly being matched with each other by the devs despite their "romance" is still at notice-me-senpai stage on Edge's part. OP and I just wish SE would do more for both characters canonically. Of course they don't have to be together in the end if the devs didn't want them to, but keeping the cheap teenage crush trope on them for 16 years is just bad writing.
What I mean by head canon is the amount of people pushing it as a canon mutual romantic relationship when it has always been portrayed as one sided. Rydia has never shown an inkling of romantic interest in Edge and has directly turned him down in Broken Heart and is aware of his feelings. The ending of TAY giving Rydia her own adopted child I feel was basically giving an Edge a reason to see Rydia while also not having the two engage in an actual serious relationship, after 17 years they made Rydia a virgin mom over having her be with Edge who blew his chances multiple times. And even in the ending Edge states he cannot visit often due to his kingly duties, and I don't think Rydia would leave Mist to become a full time queen with someone she has only ever viewed as a platonic friend.
My point is I don't think the pairing is canon valid because it is one sided and not mutual, not to mention how often Edge's feelings for Rydia are treated as a joke in game. A more serious one sided relationship is Squall and Quistis but that is all it ever amounts to, Quistis has a crush on Squall but it never develops more or becomes mutual.
I think the entire point of TAY's ending is Edge trading in his cheap crush for a more direct friendship anyways, though even that is debatable since he was literally caught spying by Cuore. Though as you said, it could very well just is that, a crush. In all the camp scenes in the Lunar Subterrane and Depths, Rydia and Edge didn't even have one together. The closest is Edge telling Yang he isn't ready to settle down and have kids (Edge is 43 btw).
As for the TAY novel it is all in Japanese only, I got these translations from the web among other scenes. It changes a lot of dialogue in TAY and adds even more FF4 parallels from what I saw.
See it how you want, but not everyone does, and it's not your right to stomp on what other people like. It's not necessarily a myth despite your claim. And TAY's ending doesn't deny RydiaxEdge either. It leaves it open. You have to admit that.
Rydia was the FIRST person to rush to Edge's aid. Your argument would've carried more weight had she come later. But because she not only came first but also combined her powers with him in a risky new spell, it shows she could've cared more for him specifically than she let on. The problem with Broken Heart is that it's a side band, not one obtained in the actual story and thus, not canon in what it conveys. It's merely a gameplay element meant as a joke, nothing more. Rydia would NEVER seriously hurt him. And while at the time of IV his interest may not have been reciprocated yet, hence the ultimania entry, by the end of TAY, her thoughts about him after discovering what he did for her clearly show that her feelings for him have grown.
Seeing how far he went for her and how he took it upon himself to help heal things between her and her foster parents - she never expected to see them again after the battle on the moon, so their arrival in Mist was a surprise that she was deeply grateful to Edge for arranging - is just the kind of thing that could plant the seed of romantic feeling in her, as her thought bubble hints. Edge may play with Cuore more than we see on screen, and seeing that he cares about her and that the girl has also taken to him could also add to her feelings, It's a combination of things, not just one. And as far as IV's ending goes, her not shunning him was the devs deliberately leaving the door and the possibility open.
If she comes to care about him enough post-TAY, then becoming his queen wouldn't be an issue for her. And what does she have in Mist to stay for once it's rebuilt? And who said she'd have to abandon it? Airships do exist in that world, and it's not unreasonable to believe that as queen she could have regular, if not always frequent, trips there if she wanted to maintain ties. And as I said, if she came to care enough for Edge to become his queen post-TAY then she'd do so knowing what she was in for. She's a strong woman and isn't afraid of responsibility.
It's possible Leviathan can control how time flows in the Feymarch. And nowhere is it said that she could be immortal outside the Feymarch. So your argument falls flat. But even if she were, I doubt she'd want to be queen forever. She could easily hand it over to a successor when she wanted to step down.
Wrong. It is because unlike the others, Edge isn't letting her know he's visiting or donating because of how he feels about her and because he likely thinks she expects him not to help and he pretends to play the role. Both come as a complete surprise to Rydia, and she's not at all unhappy about it. Edge isn't spying, he has no negative intentions. He's just watching her from afar, in love but without the nerve to act on it. His unseen assistance and wistful gazing both come from his feelings for her, you have to look at them in combination and not separately. And the very fact of Cuore exposing him and forcing him to admit to giving Rydia help she never expected he'd give her is exactly the kind of thing needed to get the ball rolling between them because it serves as a place for her to reevaluate his character and what he means to her - remember, in IV, she NEVER thanked him for anything. But in TAY's ending in her thoughts, she does, showing him warmth almost never seen in her about him before.
Being reckless doesn't mean being unlovable. I don't know where you get that false equivalence. You can't expect someone to be perfect or behave like you think they should every single moment. And what you interpret as a flirt might have been only meant as a joke. And you can't claim certain lines are mysogonistic without providing them. Until you provide the actual words, your argument fails because people interpret things differently and what you see as bad, others may see as a tease or joke. Also, if I"m not mistaken, Izayoi is his cousin, which adds weight to the idea of his comment being more a joke than a flirt. And since you can't provide any other female with whom he supposedly flirts or any other scene in which he does so with her, it's safe to say that he's toned down that side of himself more than you think.
And I already explained the difference between spying, which requires negative intent, and simply watching from afar just to see her. They are NOT the same thing. At all. And going to Mist regularly to see her doesn't mean he didn't tend to his duties. It wasn't like he went every day. He didn't. Which means he was in Eblan for much of his time. As for the magazine, it doesn't invalidate his interest in Rydia or diminish his character. Rather, it adds to it by hinting at his loneliness. He's a king who could easily have any woman in his kingdom he chose but for 16 years has refused to do so, instead he settles for having the magazine to help with the urges that come with being a longtime bachelor and refuses to give up on his longing for Rydia.
You're making assumptions on faulty arguments. Swagger isn't always genuine, sometimes it's to cover for fear and uncertainty - Edge's thought dialogue in IV 3D near the end if you have him lead shows this quite clearly. He's afraid of losing everyone, but it's not something he ever says out loud. Beneath the bravado, he does care, and much more than he lets on. And his recklessness often comes from that very caring, that he'd rather risk himself than see anyone else hurt. And you claim he's a mysogynist but fail to provide any evidence of it and fail to admit you could've possibly misinterpreted his words and their intent. So again, your argument fails.
Sometimes devs don't want to confirm anything but don't want to deny the possibility, either. There's something to be said for leaving things open to interpretation and giving players the chance to see things how they want. And Rydia adopting Cuore does not invalidate her from becoming romantically interested in Edge post-TAY just as Raine adopting Ellone in FF8 didn't keep her from falling for Laguna. By having Cuore out Edge, it not only forced him to admit what he had done for Rydia but also gave her a reason to expect him to start visiting her openly because Cuore would want to keep spending time with him, and from there, things could develop. SE has a way of putting makeshift families like this together in their stories. And Edge being 43 doesn't mean anything. A man can still love and even have children at that age. Again, you make claims about other media but fail to provide actual examples. Thus, those claims fail.
You may not like how the book is, but it doesn't change the fact that it's official and thus, everything that happens in it is also official. There's only so much you can convey on screen, especially in the 2D version. Novels allow for far more depth and characterization. And the scenes you mentioned don't deny the possibility of Rydia developing romantic feelings for him, either. It goes both ways. But Rydia describing Edge as being kind enough to be worth staying in the human world for is a huge shift in how she sees him. She didn't used to think much of him when they first met. But by the end of TAY she cares enough about him to leave the Feymarch behind forever. That can't be ignored.
Knowing what romantic love is doesn't mean she can't eventually begin to feel it for Edge. And as I said before, Broken Heart doesn't count because it's not part of the story. And it doesn't fit with what she said about him in the novelization's ending. It's a non-canon joke band, nothing more, and can be safely ignored. The band they share that does come from the story and IS canon involves a powerful magical bond between them, the blending of their magic representing the eventual blending of their hearts.
Edge's pursuit may have started because he was attracted to her, but that's not near enough to sustain an interest for 16 years. Through their adventures he came to genuinely care about her, and his interest in her is real. Otherwise he'd have picked a queen by the time of TAY. And you've never mentioned any other girl that he "flirts" with besides Izayoi, so your use of the plural is inaccurate and misleading. as is your claim of his attitude. You provide no proof for it, no actual dialogue, nor does it seem you've made any effort to look at the context of the scene(s) in question. You're just determined to see everything in a negative light.
No, that's just your opinion. It's not grasping for straws, it's seeing the hints that SE carefully left for the players to find. And it's enough for many of us just to see that the ship is possible, that the door is left open for it to happen, as SE has done. A canon possibility, not necessarily a canon certainty.
No, the ending was not just giving him a reason to keep seeing Rydia. You don't know how kids' minds work. The more Cuore sees her and Edge together, the more she'll want them to stay that way because it's what she's accustomed to and she wants to see them happy. Sometimes it takes a third party like that to get love in motion, and that's what TAY's ending set up, especially in light of Rydia's thoughts about him and what she says about him in the novel.
You say Edge blew his chances, but how? There's not one story scene where she tells him no. Broken Heart is a non-canon joke band and not an actual story cutscene, so it can be ignored and doesn't count. You say his feelings are treated as a joke but again provide no examples. if you're going to make a claim, you have to back it up. Since you didn't, it fails.
And no crush lasts for 16 years. It may have begun as that, but it grew over time. That's the only way it could've lasted so long. And he put action behind his feelings by donating to help Mist while not letting her know he was doing it, unlike the others who did it openly, and arranging for her foster parents to visit her in Mist. Those are the kinds of things someone does when they genuinely care for someone, as Edge does for Rydia.
Edge might think he's not ready to settle down, but he might just have said that out of habit and because he's still holding out hope for Rydia, whom he almost certainly would settle down for. And him not sharing any campfire scenes with her doesn't deny the viability of the ship - who's to say those were the only times the group ever camped? More could've easily happened off-screen. And even without them, it doesn't matter. Edge may have simply been too nervous then to spend quiet time alone with a girl he really cares about, which also ties into him watching her from afar.
But Cuore outing him opens up the possibility of such time together during his visits post-TAY since the girl isn't likely to be in the same room/immediate area all the time and may actually choose to purposely step out sometimes so Edge and Rydia can have moments alone with each other. Again, kids do that kind of thing, girls especially, I've experienced it myself, so trust me, it can and does happen.
You sound like all the people who said Rydia x Edge was inevitable before TAY was even out just because Rydia didn’t shun Edge at Cecil and Rosa’s wedding. I never said it was impossible btw, just unlikely and not canon the same way as say Squall x Rinoa, Cloud x Tifa, Yuna x Tidus, Zidane x Dagger, Cecil x Rosa, and even Celes x Locke has way more evidence than Edge x Rydia
Ok, she got there first, doesn’t change the fact Golbez and Luka were still coming to Edge’s aid. Broken Heart is literally in the game and Edge doesn’t even get hurt from the band. It fits Rydia’s character to turn down Edge especially from all the crude comments he has given her before.
She was surprised and thanked Edge for it, ok. There is a story scene where Rosa thanks Kain in her thoughts when Kain is giving Ceodore a serious lifetalk. Does that mean Rosa likes Kain more than a friend? Rosa has shown more gratitude and defense for Kain than Rydia has for Edge in both IV and TAY but that doesn’t mean she loves Kain more than a friend. Both Asura and Leviathan also even apologized to Rydia already in the lunar subterrane and said they regretted ousting Rydia from the Feymarch. Edge you are giving too much credit here. And again many of Rydia’s other friends have done nice things for her over the years, not just Edge. She isn’t gonna drop her leotard for him over this. And Edge literally says when talking to Cuore he can’t come often due to having to run Eblan.
I don’t think you understand but Rydia would lose her she adjusted to after 16 years (she was in the Feymarch for at least a year in Interlude) to become a full time Queen. Not to mention she also is the only alive summoner who can protect Mist. All the villagers are close to her not to mention as queen she’d have less time to spend with Cuore even due to royal duties. And Edge clearly isn’t someone who has shown he is worth the trouble considering his perverted attitude and misogyny. And Rydia clearly isn’t Rosa who pined over Cecil non stop nor does she share a childhood with Edge. Edge literally spied on her for 17 years, emphasis on spied as in she didn’t even know he was there and certainly didn’t do anything to bond with him.
There is nowhere that says Leviathan can control the flow of time in the Feymarch, and it is a fact she did not age despite spending over a year in the Feymarch in Interlude. If she aged 13 years in a short amount of time there in IV, something is clearly wrong if she is there for way longer and looks the same. TAY lists her age as just 24 and again in TAY she tells Palom that staying in the Feymarch can mess a person’s sync to the outside world’s time. She never warned as much in IV meanwhile likely because she did not know the full consequences. And if she were immortal outside the Feymarch, why would she marry someone just to have herself outlive him and all their heirs?
Watching someone without their consent is stalking, intent or not. For 17 years too which is pretty gross. Cid, Edward, Cecil etc all visited Rydia normally, that is Edge’s fault for being too shady and creepy. Cuore also didn’t force him to admit his help for Rydia, Leviathan just added that on too. Also you forget Rydia still views him as a platonic friend right? He feels bad for him over what happened to his parents, she helps in battle against Ifrit with the others, and even after all the horrible things he said to her in IV she still tried talking to him at Cecil and Rosa’s wedding. Platonic friendship is not romance and for IV and TAY it never developed beyond that on Rydia’s end. That includes non canon spinoffs too. Official books always list Edge’s crush on Rydia as one sided.
This isn’t about Edge being unworthy of love of any kind, it is a talk about him not being worthy of Rydia or any girl’s romantic feelings. In the Eblan four’s debut Edge catches Izayoi off guard and asks why a woman as pretty as her and her age isn’t married. Later in tower of Babil Izayoi asks Edge to treat her like a Ninja first and woman second. Edge then says things like “Are you serious?” and “You’ve gone crazy, woman”. Izayoi isn’t even Edge’s cousin, Idk where you got that from. Also he barely interacts with other women in the game other than Izayoi and Rydia, most is Luka where he says she is “Lookin’ good”. The only women he really talked to in IV was Rosa and Rydia.
[auote] And I already explained the difference between spying, which requires negative intent, and simply watching from afar just to see her. [/quote]
Stalking on her is indeed creepy. Saying “but he isn’t doing harm” is justifying toxic problematic behavior. Also lonely? He has his entire kingdom, the eblan four, and seneschal. He isn’t near as lonely as say Rydia was in Mist. It is likely he did give up considering Ninjutsu is a Geraldine family secret art passed down to their heirs exclusively mentioned in the official 1991 FFIV databook and IV. He is training four unrelated successors meanwhile with ninjutsu, for all we know he probably has given up if he is violating the Geraldine family’s code on succession. He didn’t even confront Rydia for 17 years outside of formal parties btw. He is 43 and tells Yang in lunar subterrane he isn’t “old enough for children”, Yang and Cecil were much younger and in their 20s when they had their kids.
Yes, in the inner monologue he actually says he wants to run away and asks why he is even with these people in IV 3D before deciding he wants to protect Eblan and Rydia. And there are many examples of him being a misogynist. Be it the constant unwanted flirting to Rydia, flirting with Rosa at her wedding, telling Izayoi she is a crazy woman because she wanted to be treated as a ninja before a woman, calling Rydia and Rosa children on the lunar whale, saying stuff like “You can’t argue with a woman” afterwards, etc. His entire infatuation with Rydia started because he thinks she is hot, and he had the same feeling for Rosa. It is likely he focused on Rydia because she is single.
43 is considered old by FF standards, especially when Cecil and Yang had kids at a much younger age. The idea of Edge in his 60s with a child that could call him grandpa is unlikely. And I don’t think you understand Raine was made for FF8 to be with Laguna, unlike Rydia who is her own character and never even lived next to Edge. Laguna is also a much more honest and kind person compared to Edge.
It really doesn’t, II’s novel completely changed the story and cut many characters yet is official and had the same writer, that doesn’t make it canon. Minwu and Ultima is canon, not the novel which removes his sacrifice completely. Tokita, the main writer of IV and main writer of TAY did not even write the official novelizations. Instead the assistant writer for TAY wrote both IV and TAY novelizations. One scene in IV 3D where Rydia shakes her head in disapproval when Edge says Zeromus couldn’t control him because of his “love of justice” is changed in the novel to have Rydia laugh with him. The novelization of TAY has Edge literally order Gekkou to knock Rydia out because Rydia is so worried about whether everyone surviving to the point of crying (TAY novel makes Rydia cry more than she did in IV). And also you are twisting the quote from the TAY novel, Rydia says “People as kind like Edge are why I want to stay in the human world”, not specifically Edge. And also a lot of dialogue is either added or completely changed from the game. And even despite all that nowhere does it confirm Edge x Rydia that much, at best it makes Rydia view Edge as less unsuiting.
Inferno is just flame and firaga, calm down. The emotional part was moreso between Edge and Rubicante even than Edge and Rydia, she was just there and followed Edge’s idea he got from Rubicante. There are plenty of other bands, even story bands like Oboro Strike between Edge and Yang that just happens over one talk despite them not being together majority of the game. Broken Heart is way more canon than a novelization not even written by Tokita or acknowledged by Ultimania. And as I said, past novel/comic adaptions for games have never been considered canon either just because official.
The defensiveness is real, again he flirted with Rosa in IV too. I am not even using implications that if he flirted with Izayoi, that he could have flirted with more women in the past 17 years. And are you sure he could’ve picked anyone? Compared to Cecil and Yang who knew their wives personally for many years, Edge lacks many of their personal traits. He obviously isn’t a bad guy but being a flirt, casually taking risks like telling the Eblan four to jump off the tower of zot on chance or thinking he can take Ifrit himself is risky. This isn’t like Cecil who acknowledged he could die and wanted Rosa to run so Ceodore wouldn’t be a total orphan. The Eblan four look up to Edge yet he always blows them off or says “whatever”, rarely giving direct answers. Do you really think just any girl would jump to be Edge’s wife just because? His personality has some serious faults compared to the other married characters, and him spying on Rydia is again very problematic. He himself said he isn’t even ready to have kids to Yang, and even in Interlude he is in shock when he finds Rosa is pregnant.
It is as canon possible as Aerith coming back to life and marrying Cloud lol. I never denied it is a possibility if Square wanted to continue TAY oc, but as it is now it isn’t actual canon nor has much weight when taking into consideration Rydia’s feelings. In countless non canon official spin offs their relationship is still treated as a one sided joke, with Dissidia making Edge look like a braggart know it all trying to impress Rydia with his knowledge of summons or record keeper having broken heart be changed to Rydia not just shooting Edge with an arrow but having Leviathan wash him away in a flood. This isn’t like Kain who’s feelings for Rosa had an actual relevant plot point and was part of his character arc in both IV and TAY. Even when Edge tries to go fight Ifrit and tells Rydia to stay back Rydia straight up says “yeah whatever” and ignores him. She definitely isn’t fond of Edge trying to play cool by himself. Even in IV where she said nothing bad to Kain for his betrayals and told Cecil to forgive Golbez even after all Golbez did, Edge pissed her off so bad she tells Edge “It’s a miracle Zeromus didn’t take control of you” and nods in disgust when Edge says it is his “love of justice”. Rydia however is a very forgiving person, even pitying Lugae and the Archfiends in the lunar subterane, but as it is now she views Edge as a good friend just like Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Yang, Cid, Edward, Palom, Porom, Luka, etc. They even had interlude made 3 years after and they still decided not to add anything more on Rydia’s side and they still haven’t anywhere for the last 14 years. Rydia has shown no romantic interest towards anyone despite being in the Feymarch for many equivalent of human years nor for all of IV and TAY. It just isn’t canon, just head canon people assume is canon because Rydia isn’t married or has any love interest herself.
Imagine thinking a novelization that changes scenes from the game and has the assistant writer is more canon than the game made by the main writer. Firion married Maria in the ffII book but that isn’t anywhere else despite being in the official novel of II but you won’t let that go. And even in the novel it still doesn’t cement anything beyond platonic feelings on Rydia’s end. Broken Heart is a canon showing of their relationship made by the devs and writers. Even in IV Rydia blew off Edge when he tried flirting with her on Cid’s airship and in the credits of 3d remake she shuns him after he makes a move at her. Their relationship in ultimania is classified as one sided with Edge. Again their relationship had shown no difference in 17 whole years and not all throughout TAY until possibly at the ending.
Cuore literally scolds Edge for being late and isn’t like the other kids, she views Edge as a playmate going off all the dialogue she had at the end of TAY. Playing with a kid sometimes (because Edge is still busy with his kingdom) doesn’t automatically make you a father figure. And why would Edge specifically make Rydia happy other than the fact he is playing with Cuore, to the point of Rydia wanting to marry him? Cuore would also move away from her friends in Mist if that happened as well as Rydia from all her neighbors and her mother’s dragon AS WELL as her mother’s spirit which dwells in Mist.
We are going off of screen and head canon now, huh. Rydia and Edge have no known interactions with each other in the 17 year gap outside the ones in the formal events in Interlude, and we know Edge only ever spied on her as it is never stated he visited her directly. How it could grow on Edge’s without spending time to get to know Rydia more comes off as puppy love and stubbornness to grow up. Edge clearly isn’t nervous to call Izayoi a crazy woman for wanting to be treated as an equal instead of a woman or flirt with her, so what gives? It is his fault if he doesn’t want to man up and actually get to know her and renounce his creepy ways. There is no mutual love, just a crush and a woman who isn’t interested. and again headcanon interpretation of the campscene with Yang, in Interlude Edge is shocked that Rosa was pregnant while Rydia congratulates Rosa and Cecil.
Again more head canon, Cuore doesn’t even call Rydia mom in game nor can she properly understand human speech and you think she is gonna want Edge and Rydia to spend time with each other? Edge is there to play with her. The devs never developed Rydia and Edge’s relationship in interlude and never got them together in TAY and even gave Rydia a daughter who is a modified genetic copy of her. Edge literally trains non blood related successors of the Geraldine clan Ninjutsu. It isn’t looking good at all for Edge x Rydia.
