I'm currently at level 53 for both Rydia's and Palom's Tales. I really don't understand why this game has such strict drop mechanics. If I understand correctly, 5% to get *any* drop at all, and only then (assuming it's dropping from one of the requisite enemies) 0.39% for it to be the most rare item. In my experience this is far far worse than the 1% Trapezohedron drops in Final Fantasy XIII, even if one was going for six of them (which I managed on the original PS3 release).
I recognise I should just give up on it and move to the final chapter, but the fact that Mindflayer summon is not available there irks me.
It's not as long a grind as 10k battles in ff8 ach.
The only way to increase the odds is by equipping Treasure Hunters and Rare Bands, which's unfortunately not available at this stage of the game yet.
No idea what ten thousand battles in FFVIII is about, though. And I've easily racked up more than 400 battles by now.
