Extremely good tip when starting as Sparta
On your first turn you should devote 60 people to army and enough workers on production so as to build a gymnasium on turn 3

On turn 2, same as above

On turn 3 you should have a general, use it to conquer Messini. Now this is very important, if you DON'T get the "Extra Conquest level +1" restart the game (loading the save doesn't work). This is very important because "Extra conquest level +1" triggers Messini's attack bonus twice so you get 100 slave from one attack. Also don't forget to build a gymnasium.

On turn 4 devote enough workers to army growth to get a general on turn 5.

On turn 5 use your second general to conquer Messini.

Congrats! You now have 700 population on turn 5 and are massively ahead of everyone else.

Edit: If you're really crazy about min-maxxing you can get an extra general and then an extra conquest level to get 700 pop on turn 3. Though be prepared to restart a lot.

Too bad Messini doesn't exist when playing as Athens :)

@Malteze,

Are you really saying, as the developer, that you agree that restarting to achieve a certain result is the correct approach to a sucessful start a Sparta?!?

Woah, are your legs okay from that kneejerk? He just said ONE word.

I think you can also do it if you get a free general instead of Extra conquest Level.

Yeah, if you get an extra general and extra conquest level after that you can do it in 3 turns not 5, though you'll have to save scum a lot :)

Considering save scumming/restarting is the only way to stand a chance of beating the harder difficulties/missions in this game, are you really surprised?

Whats wrong when player finds something interesting we did not think about? It's okay with balance - kind of legal exploit. Would you like us to fix it? Why?

I would like the idea of buffing Messini's alliance bonus to 20%, so that there would be atleast some contest on whether to go for early population or increased worker limits.

Done, Messini will be more usefully as an ally in the next patch. Thanks for the advice.
And i think restarting of the game it's a soft cheat, so I wouldn't recommend it for all. You could try another ways to obtain the max rating.

Everytime I use this method I end up with starvation which leads to famine which kills hundreds of population, so not sure it's worth it.
