In my usage, and experience playing with others people will generally go for the Machine Gun as it offers great damage and range when upgraded. The Magnum and shotguns arent too bad in the damage department but their projectiles dont go as far or as fast as the Machine Guns.
Generally I'll see people upgrade the machinegun into like a flame or thunder Beta (using mats I don't remember off the top of my head but I believe there is a guide for it).
In terms of difficulty, the game later on almost becomes overly easy. With the current build of the game - which i believe is being updated this week and may change, you'll want to get full S ranked outfit which will unlock I believe 12 badge slots. You'll use these badges to stack on tank or damage modifiers to increase your preformance. Getting mats and cash for a full S ranked outfit doesn't take overly long either, if you can find a guide on which one you want to go for so you know what missions to do.
Hope some of that helped, I'm not really up to date if theres any great lobby etiquate; most people I've lobbied with just hang out and chat before doing missions.
for gameplay always use cover. Bait out enemy fire, take cover, then when it ends, pop out and fire at them. Always strafe fire, they tend to miss most of the time if you circle them while firing. Dodging helps too, there is a time during the dodge that you take no damage.
For badges, always equip some. For starting out find ones that give HP, Air, and dexterity. try to equip combo ones such as hp/air, hp/dex, air/dex, etc...
this will give you some more survivability. Be careful of negative stats though, im in the negative resists at the moment, just dont get like -50 to all resistance xD
for weapons, get the machinegun. It is a pretty solid weapon choice all throught the game, cant go wrong with it. Youll want to enhance it to about lvl 6-7, this will get you through hard mode solo. Also upgrading it to a beta is good for extra damage. you can uograde it to alpha for a bit for starting out.
edit* there is a weapons guide made by a group of GOCCO players. it lists all the materials needed to upgrade your weapons if you waant to check it out.
Honestly, once you upgrade your weapon to at least alpha, you'll notice a huge difference in the damage you deal.
but it would be more fun to just join other to go.trust me
oh my recommend weapon are magnum and paperfan.
goodluck
with lv.7-9 , enhanced beta I can go all-around both solo and party on hard mode before I have Gattling gun
Now I'm farming money for Gattling gun and find some better S rank badges
