Old vs New version?

I used to own this game about 10 years back when it was first released (and Steam didn't exist yet) so I was happy to spot it on Steam the other day.
However, I noticed some major difference in the game between this version and the old one.

- No turrets (the ones with 4 armor, 2 range, 1 damage for $2)
- Limited map selection. The old version of the game had more and also different maps.
- Different city designs. Cities look different. They now lack platforms for plains while in the old version didn't just hover in the air like they do now.
- No large ground units/naval units. Each faction used to have one ground and one naval unit with 2 attacks each. A Bullfrog for the brown faction for example.
- Death animations. The old version sometimes zoomed in on an exploding enemy, which I thought was fun. No more in this version.
- 'Show grid' option. If I remmeber correctly the old version has an option to turn on the grid on a map so you could make better informed decisions (i.e. calculate an enemy's range, for example).

What happened? Why was this cut? Are we playing an even older version of the game?

That sounds like you talk about MA2: Phantom Renaissance. This is MA1.

CTRL toggles the hex fields and SHIFT shows the threats to the actual field the mouse is pointing at. Works in both versions.

Can you help, is now supported offline multiplayer system? as it was long ago, i can do turn and go away for weeks , and then continiue a previous party with other player? or now massive assault is only LAN and Campaighn mode supported?

For Multiplayer you need the game MASSIVE ASSAULT NETWORK, not any of the other games in the series.
There IS however, a time limit for your turn. If I'm not mistaken it's either ONE WEEK or TWO WEEKS.

you meant M.A.N. 2? not first game? does it have active players?

Correct, MAN2 is what you need.
I do not know how active it is. I played a pirated version 6 years ago and there were about 10 people online at the time. Now it could be 0 or it could be 100, I do not know. I'm buying it tomorrow.

The only review on Steam of the game says:

"It's developer, Wargaming.net, kinda abandoned it but it still has a couple of hundred loyal fans who play it regularly so you won't be lacking oponents since this is multiplayer-only game(with exception of playing against AI bots). "

I would return it in one case- if i can play Multiplayer with other players- this game is not interesting for me
