The Splintered Sea FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Here's a list of frequently asked questions about Besiege's The Splintered Sea expansion. This list will be updated over time.

How much will it cost?
$8.99

Is this the end of free updates to Besiege?
No! Definitely not! We plan to continue supporting Besiege with free updates and there will be a free content update released alongside the expansion’s release.

Will there be new achievements?
We don’t currently have plans to add achievements for the Splintered Sea, but this could change. Our main concern is that if we add achievements, they will also be present in the base game of Besiege and that would mean people that don’t own the expansion can't complete all the achievements.

Do underwater explosions physically affect the water’s surface?
Absolutely! Detonating a large explosive under the ocean pushes water upwards, creating a bulge on the surface that interacts with your machine just like waves do.

Can you load machines that use DLC blocks if you don’t own the DLC?
No. You will get a warning that the machine uses DLC you do not own.

Are Barrels the only blocks that float?
No! All blocks that would float in real life, float in Besiege.

Will my computer be able to run it?
We’ve worked hard to optimize the new water system as much as possible and we’re confident that it’s in a good state. However, the water simulation & rendering definitely adds additional load to your system and performance will be a bit lower in levels that contain water.

We have increased the minimum recommended specs for The Splintered Sea expansion, up from the base game ones, and you should definitely take a look at them on the steam page. Most importantly to note is that the expansion requires DirectX 11 or above and the graphical requirements are significantly higher than the base game of Besiege.

Note: Modern CPU architectures are far superior to older ones. A CPU with a clock speed of 2.5Ghz today will perform vastly better in Besiege than a CPU with the same clock speed from 15 years ago.

Can sensor blocks see water?
Yes. The sensor blocks can be configured to detect water, or see through it.

Do balloons work in water?
Normal balloons work in water but hot air balloons do not, for obvious reasons.

Do Wings & Wing Panels work in water?
Yes.

Can I do anything to help out before launch?
Yes! Wishlisting the expansion helps us tremendously!

Can I play multiplayer with my friends, if we don’t all own the DLC?
When creating a multiplayer session, the host can decide whether content from The Splintered Sea is allowed. If the content is turned off, any player can join the game. If the DLC content is turned on, only people who own the expansion can join the game.

How many new campaign levels does the DLC bring?
The Splintered Sea introduces 10 new campaign levels, all designed around water.

Will there be new level editor objects with the DLC?
Yes. We have added many of the new ocean themed objects to the level editor and we hope to add more in the future.

Why isn’t the Splintered Sea a free update?
It's always been our intention to continue supporting Besiege for as long as we're able, but in order to do that we need support from our community.
The Splintered Sea is the culmination of almost 3 years development that's produced a high-quality & feature-rich water implementation, with a large chunk of new content to go with it.

The Splintered Sea is aimed at players who would like to see us continue making large scale additions to Besiege and who are happy to provide the support that enables us to do that.
