How do you rotate a hinge when placing it?

I'm trying to install a hinge on one of my contraptions, however it is only letting me orient it in a north/south orientation which isn't what I want. I need to be able to spin it so the hinge goes east/west. There's gotta be a way to make a hinge go the way you want it to, does anyone know how?

While placing it, tap R to rotate it.

In the top right of the screen there's a button with an image of a mouse. Click it and it will show you all of the default key bindings (in case you have another issue at some point). :)
