Is there a way to make a DIY winch?

This is perhaps the single most important lacking block from the game right now. Suspension and ropes don't give me the amount of power I wish to have. I figured it might be possible to build a poor man's winch with the existing tools but couldn't figure out how to do one effectively.

You can get silly amounts of torque -- http://besiege.freeforums.net/thread/435/chaos-engine-arguably-undeniably-incredible for instance -- but "chaos engine" builds aren't known for controllability.

Winches, AFAICT, you can't properly build -- the obvious way of wiring a spring to a rotating block doesn't seem to have the spring winding around the block, anyway.
