Hi all,
For the below text, keep in mind : Arab =/= Persan, the only no-arab in the list below is the prince of persia. It's like confusing England and United States, same language (some accent and words are differents), same skin color, but not same culture ! Even if they are "nearby".
So how can we forgot :
- Altair (Syrian) in Assassin's Creed
- Prince of Persia (Persan of course, the license is inspired from the thousand and one night litterature, of Persian origin)
Then :
- Shaheen (Saudi) from Tekken 7 annonced in 2014 and released in 2015
- Rashid (Saudi) from street fighter V in 2016 that launched a debate that went well I find despite many racist comments under the video of his trailer at the time, many welcomed him well despite some as always, however it really pleased me and put balm in my heart to know that we accept it more than we want us to believe !
- Ana and Pharah from Overwatch in 2016, they are Egyptian
- Bayek from Assassin's creed origin (in Egypt) 2017
Honourable Mentions :
- Salim in uncharted, that can be played in multiplayer
- Khajit also who according to the community seems to resemble the Arabs (they live in desert and are nomads, and who is a very sympathetic people for me (always wishes a good thing at the end of a conversation) and maybe the red-guard apparently inspired from the Moors.
- Prince Ali from Beyond Oasis (game with elements similar to The Legend of Zelda series (1994 and 2007 on wii's virtual consoles))
For the case of shantae :
I would like to specify that the game is based on a Persian myth and not Arabic (the thousand and one nights are Persian) ! And she's a genius, so she doesn't have a nationality at all. It's a mythical creature!
And that today there are no bellydancers anymore except in Egypt (Cairo, capital) and 99% of foreigners come to take dance classes.
To conclude:
I want to thank the people who are respectful towards us, because it touches me to know that we are not reduced to the same images that unfortunately a lot of media reduce us, I am moved and I thank you very much. I hope that the world of video games will welcome other Arab characters (I include Turkish, Persian, etc. although they are not Arab, I am aware of that) or other characters from forgotten horizons / badly perceived / in the blur.
And who knows, Arab creators themselves in order to propose their own vision (I would like to have the courage, when my studies give me time, I add that to my list of projects!)
Probably why Wayforward is still an indie, and not ton$ of gold. Cost of Freedom...
*Middle East, which is better descriptor than Arabic, however. This game series needs to be translated into the relevant regional languages, then it probably be a hit.
