Effects of Censorship?
I know that this version is censored. However, I am unsure as to how much, and whether it affects the story to any real extent. Do the removed scenes affect character development, for example? I want to know before I decide on buying this- this sounds like an excellent game, but I'm not sure whether I should wait for the uncensored version to be released. I don't want to buy this, and then feel like the uncensored version would tell the story better (I'm only going to buy one version, no matter what). Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Oh, and please try to avoid spoilers. Thank you!

The censorship affects sex scenes (removed) and some "strong language" jokes have been tuned down a bit.

I can understand that, but that wasn't the entire question- is there character development inside those scenes? Sex can be a pretty emotional time, after all, and characters could say all sorts of things that would develop the story.

Character development? In the sense that it's a big step in a relationship to have sex (in this case) there could potentially be some, but you're not missing out on any story development during sex scenes.
In some cases there are slight changes in personality traits, but you're usually made aware that sex will and has taken place.
Some people may argue that sex scenes are an important part of the story for one of the characters, which I won't deny either.

If you're still unsure and don't mind or even prefer sexual content, I would say play it safe and wait for the uncensored version. But there are a couple scenes present in the Steam version that aren't in the uncensored version, if I am not mistaken.

The steam version has a few extra scenes? Why? Do you know if they're anything important?

I haven't completed the uncensored version, but there are people who have, and I have heard people refer to some scenes as "Vita-only" scenes.

Why?

The Steam version of Grisaia is a port of the censored version that was released on PS Vita, and it's likely the developers wanted to fill in a few extra scenes due to the sexual content being cut out for a handheld release. There are also a few new CGs that are not present in the uncensored version to fill in for the lacking H-scenes in the CG gallery.

Due to the nature that they're not present in the uncensored version, I wouldn't say they're important per se. I'm sure they help build on the story, though.

So, just to be clear. This version of the VN cuts out the actual sex, but everything else from the original version is intact, and there's a few extra scenes to make up the difference. The uncensored, original version does contain sex scenes, but doesn't have the extra scenes. However, nothing in the removed sex scenes is important or contributes anything tangible to the plot, except maybe in the case of one character. Correct?

That's pretty much correct, yes, although someone who has read both the censored and uncensored versions might be able to provide you with more information than me, considering the only route I've completed in the uncensored version is the one where some of the sex scenes are supposedly relevant to the character's background story. You wouldn't be missing out on the story, but there are certain "hints" in the sex scenes that become noticable after you've already completed the character's route.

Okay, thanks! I really appreciate the info.

So all of the sex scenes, not just the CG's are cut from the VN?

In some cases I think that much wouldn't necessarily be lost from this, except for Yumiko's route considering the sex scene in that one is pretty integral to the relationship development between her and Yuuji.

I was considering buying this even though I have the JP version just to support a great VN (as well as have it in my steam library) but this makes me kind of leery.

The whole thing is really perplexing to me, you can walk into any bookstore and buy fantasy novels or romance novels that have sometimes very lurid descriptions of sex and without even having to be 18. Hell, I've seen teenage girls with copies of 50 Shades of Grey on the bus and we all know what that's about...

will their be an un cut version on steam or at all? I have watched the full anime and would love to play this but refuses to buy it since its hacked. :(

This version is definitely worth buying, and you aren't missing as much as you'd think with the sex scenes. If you're really worried you could buy it here and play it alongside the fan translation, but, after playing the game and going through the sex scenes as they occured, not much is being missed. If anything the sex scnes often breaks the mood being established and have an awkward and unpleasant atmosphere unless you are really in the mood for it.

There isn't much story presented during them, but the thoughts of the characters sometimes give hints as to how they feel about each other. Personally I think their feelings come across without the scenes, but some people may disagree.

Personal recommendation: Buy it here and if you're desperate then find a fan translated english version of it to download. If you feel guilty then just buy the 18+ version when it comes out as well.

Not on steam, but there is a site called Denpasoft that will eventually have the full release.
This version isn't "hacked", it's the official release for the PS Vita ported to PC. If you want to play it then please do yourself a favor and buy it here. Trust me, the most you miss out on is a couple of hours of basically filler in a game that's already 100 hours long.
