True. I had the same issue of finding out what the trial of speed was until I looked at my inventory and there were wording under the lock name in paranthesis like "Proof of speed". I then recall when he picks up the lock, Graham says that he did so for proof of his think thinking.
I think having a voice over line of Graham stating something like "Did I picked up something earlier that would show proof of my quick thinking skills?" as after Mordack asking for a proof of speed would make the puzzle earlier, but would be a better game design, imo.
I didn't even realize the inventory description or the "fast wit" achievement.
I just figured (after I handed it over): "Alright, that's nifty. You pass the test of speed, because you finished it before you even took it. Very fast indeed."
Adding another hint, just clubbing the right answer into you, would've spoiled it from my point of view, and surely wouldn't have made it "better game design", whatever that might be.
But hey, I also enjoyed the last two riddles of the Sphinx...
