I'm using three .png files for the buttons and using the Image Button tool. Each button is a different choice the player can choose. Each of them is directed to a different label and conversation with another character.
Thank you for replying so quickly!
No, it just goes to the first line of what comes after the directed label, refuses to progress, and the buttons stay on screen.
For those of you who are using their own image buttons instead of the branches, make a border with the branch button over the image button layer. The border will need to be clicked in instead of the initial image, but your own button will fade out like it's supposed to.
I'm not really sure how to make a border with the branch button over my image button as ladilol suggests.

As you can see, the image button has a border created by the branch button tool, which is layered over the image button in scene layers.
Both buttons lead to the same location and target so as not to get confusing. You'll need to click on the border rather than the image button itself to progress the story without the image buttons sticking there.
You can fiddle with the border size and position as you will, but I jotted down how much I take away from the initial position and size of the image button in case you wanted to try that.
Hope that helps!
It worked! Thank you so much for this advice!
