How the time mechanic compares to Majoras Mask?
I have played Majoras Mask, but even though I didnt finish it, I got the hang of it. In that game there isnt really a TRUE MAIN STORY. Its all about discovering sidequests by talking to the right people at the right time in the right location. If you started a sidequest, but didnt finish it, then if the timer run out ( the moon crashed down ) you will have to do the sidequest all over again. Now if you managed to finish the sidequest and as a reward you got a heart piece, ability item, or simply a thing needed to start another quest ... then even if you had to start from the beginning you wouldnt need to do that quest again, because you already got its reward. You will just move on into other quests, and so on.

Is this how lighting returns is? I hate farming and grinding, but loved FFXIII and XIII-2 because of the story and the battle system.

If the days run out, do I have to do the main quests ALL OVER AGAIN, in order to get the quest items again in order to progress with the story? Honestly, I dont like the idea of having to complete a quest more than one time after I completed 100% and finished it already.

It's similar but you will have to complete MAIN (not side) quests over again. Main quests are a small part compared to side quests anyway.

I read that the timer was made by the devs as a way to make the world feel alive and give you a sense of realism, rather than a mechanic that can handicap your experience. That even if I try do all the quests I can, talk to as many people as possible, and do regular backtracking, I still will have plenty of time to spare.

Worst case scenario: I played for a significant amount of time, and in the last chapter/episode the time runs out, and its game over for me. How fast can I get to the point where time ended starting from the beginning of the game?

Yes, you "technically" have MUCH more time than you need to 99% (you just can't finish one side-quest unless you're NG+) everything on first playthrough. And if you keep spamming chronostatis, you could probably end up with +7 days with nothing to do.

Other than some time-based quests, you can just disregard the time limit and everyone that hates the game because of it. It's not a restraint, not at all.

Thats great news. I would definitely buy this game right now, if I wasnt considering playing XIII-2 dlc first in order to get more background story. I finished and almost completed XIII and XIII-2 on ps3 (between 90 and 95%), and I want to know if the lightning/snow, and sazh story dlcs are worth it. Most people say they are.

Well Snow's DLC is basically a very short cutscene and battle so it's hard to say it has any story. Lightning's DLC is the real ending of XIII-2, Sazh story is basically irrelevant and revolves around senseless gambling.
I dunno about "real ending" for Lightning's, more like extended. It explains what happens to her and elaborates on something another character said, but that's it.

Thats exactly what I heard. That requiem of the goddess adds more info about what happened. I hate serendipity mini games. I tried the slots and the chocobo races and got bored out of my mind, so I couldnt get all the fragments there. Same with the Brain Challenge questions at academia 4XX. I have a guide with me, so I can get all the fragments I need with no problem, but its not something that would have come natural. Thats why i decided to just let it go ( only got 146 fragments ).

If only I could get the dlc on sale through the psn store, then I would get it and finish everything I want before moving into XIII-3.

Just an FYI for curiosities sake I made a new game+ and use cheats to have infinite EP to keep spamming Chronostatis unless I need to move the time and I was able to do all 5 main quests and a majority of the side quests (45) and at least 25 canvas prayers within the first 2 Days. This leaves you with way too much time to finish the rest of the game.
