I began playing this game after I heard it's praises last year, having already played everything from Rome onwards (except Attila).
And my goodness...this game is amazing. I have played Shogun TW for last 2 years and I was already used to the old controls, and this is as great as STW. At first the map seemed a bit short but as I got more into it I became thoroughly engrossed and found the game superb.
And a big point is - S1TW and M1TW have the best AI out of the entire TW series. I have actually seen AI use really intelligent tactics and I have suffered crushing defeats. The only game that comes close to the AI of this game and STW is Shogun 2. It is amazing how two decade-old games have an AI that is as great as a human, yet none of the new games.
Not playing the Steam version yet, because my disk version is still working fine, but still this game is amazing. I don't know why they removed awesome things this game has from succeeding TW games. They should come back to it some day.
When you couple that with a Risk game board map that allows the AI a much greater ability to perform well you've got a possible view into why the AI now doesn't perform as it did in MTW1 and STW1. And it manages to perform as well as it does in S2 because the map while 3D is still an island with specific map choke points throughout, meaning once again the AI is afforded a working space it can handle.
