When using the self-extracting EXE, point the installer at:
NAME_OF_YOUR_HARD_DISK:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Total war medieval 1 Gold\
That simple.

Heard there is supposed to be a readme file you need, but there is none in the zip.
The installation path you need to point the installer at for the Steam version of the game is something like "[your hard disk]:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\Medieval Total War Gold" (precise wording may be different, open up the steamapps folder & take a look for specific spelling). The opening post has this in bold as all mods were made pre-Steam, so by default they will not know where to look for the "medieval_TW.exe" file that runs the game.
In the "steamapps" folder you'll find the "medieval_TW.exe" file that runs the game. Then, after you have installed the mod to the Medieval directory inside the steamapps folder, you'll need to make a shortcut on the Windows desktop pointing directly to the EXE file in that folder (i.e. DO NOT try to run the game through Steam, simply click on your new shortcut which will by-pass the Steam settings & make the game run as if it's the old version using your mod, without the useless Steam launcher getting in the way & trying to force weird configuration things on you).
To get two different mods to work, **BEFORE INSTALLING THE FIRST MOD**, I'd suggest copying the entire "Medieval Whatever It's Called" folder out of "steamapps" & putting this new copy in something like "C:\games\clean copy of medieval".
When you install the second mod, you can just point the installer for THAT mod at the new copy you've made (i.e. second install path would be "C:\games\clean copy of medieval" or whatever). Once you have done this, you'll have to make a shortcut on your Windows desktop that points to the EXE in THIS folder (i.e. "C:\games\clean copy of medieval\medieval_TW.exe"). Rename your shortcut to the name of the mod which is installed on that path.
ONE PROVISO: This is what we used to do back in the day (before steam) to get two different mods running of Medieval Total War. It might be worth trying, after you've copied the original medieval folder out of "steamapps", to try to run the game to make sure the copy works. To do this, navigate to the main folder of the copy you've just made (i.e. "clean copy of medieval" or whatever) & double-click on the medieval_TW.exe file, just to make sure it runs. If it does, proceed as I suggested above.
Hope this helps!
