Game Crashes on Start-Up
This Christmas, I installed Medieval Total War (the first one, of course) and it installed with no issues- but when I clicked "play" on the launcher, it gave me a black screen and then it crashed. It gave me the usual "Medieval_TW won't launch. Windows is finding the problem". Of course, it found nothing and I tried re-installing and relaunching with no sucess- and there is no way for me to access compatibility mode for it via the right click/Properties method. I haven't played this game in years and I truly wish to be able to play it- if someone can help me, it would be wonderful.

Btw, I have all my drivers fully updated, so I've no idea why this is going on other than the fact the the game is rather old?

On an update, Shogun Total War works fine, and there are 2 cache errors- which I reacquired but they're not fixed.

The problem is there still. It still crashes when you go with a high volume of soldiers.

But the issue is that I can't even launch the bloody game in the first place!

Get in touch with Saga, tell them the problem and that you are using the steam game, rather than the disc, they may be able to help.

Same problem, except my copy claims it is running even though my task manager does not register it. I have to reboot the computer to get it to stop... Help?

I also get a "graphics card not supported", and it's a brand-new laptop so I believe all the drivers are up-to-date.

I'm not using the disc version, btw

Same here, I don't think it is a question of old/new game (I'm using Win7 and my computer is pretty old), it is just because this Steam version doesn't work.

Talking back and forth with Sega Tech Support, and they're syaing it's incompatbile with Win10. I can't find anyway to run it in a former compatibility mode. Am I going to have to get a refund?

Fortunately for me, my Windows 10 desktop does not believe in Sega Support.

Yes, if I were you I would seek a refund.

Are you running on Intel HD graphics by any chance?

I'm running whatever graphics my HP laptop came with. I was hoping that since steam was the latest, greatest thing since sliced bread it could care enough to have games that were compatible with operating systems... This is really disappointing.

And Sega says it's not their fault, it worked whent they released it....

I've just looked at a boatload of HP laptops and none of them mention the graphics card. That means Intel HD Graphics and you would not be the first person I have seen with problems getting Total War games to work with Intel HD Graphics.

I would certainly seek a refund if I were you. If Sega Suppport have told you that the game doesn't work on Windows 10, then you have a pretty good case for a refund. Good luck.

Well, this is just a big bummer. I really wanted to play the game on my Windows 10 computer. Kind of silly that they released an older game when people are most likely going to use Windows 10. *sigh* Sadness.

The store page lists only compatibility with Windows 7 and Windows 8. However, the game does work on Windows 10 because it works flawlessly for me. But I do have a VGA connection to my monitor.

I really don't know what the problem is but it is not Windows 10 (at least, not primarily). People with Intel HD Graphics and/or using HDMI connections to either TV or monitor appear to be the ones having problems.

Unfortunately, I am not particularly knowledgeable about hardware because I really would love to help you guys get the game up and running.

Trying for a refund seems to be your best bet at this point and I am sorry that I cannot be of more help.

As an afrterthought, have you guys tried running the game with Windows 8 compatibilty?

Go to the Steam>SteamApps>common>Total War Medieval 1 Gold folder.

Find the Medieval_TW.exe > right click on it > choose properties>compatibilty and then set compatibilty to Windows 8.

When that is done, right click on the .exe again and choose create shortcut. Move the shortcut to the desktop and try to run the game from the shortcut.

I cannot guarantee that will help. It may be as useless as starting the game through Steam but it might be worth trying.

Fianlly, do you guys have Windows Media Player installed? The readme file in the Medieval folder says Windows Media Player 6.4 or higher is required for the game to work. There is a link in the readme file to the Microsoft site so that it can be downloaded.

I tried that, unfortunately it did not work. I shall keep the game and pray for an update- I refuse to lose hope.
