Crashes after the latest patch
I can't play more than a few minutes after the latest patch. I start a new campaign, and, by the time I have moved a few units, it crashes.

if you didnt already, I suggest changing in game screen resoluation to your
monitor's, for example: if your monitor is 1920x1080 by default, then you should
change game res to 1920x1080, you can do this by going in game video settings
on main menu.

also, if you using Windows 10, go to settings>gaming(xbox logo), untick following
settings and close the game DVR on slider.

"show xbox game bar when I launch a verified game"
"open game bar when I use controller logo"

in game overlays causing most problems nowadays, especially if u on win10
because how bad windows 10 is

you can also try run as admin with windows XP/7 compability mode(right
click game exe on steam directory, properties, compbility tab, choose from
drop down list, hit apply and ok

Medieval Total war 1 patches are usually updates the game launcher, not the
game itself. you can notice the patch size something like 2MB or so, thats updates
the SEGA's(publisher) digital signature. for some reason they keep updating that
since several weeks. the patch shouldnt affect your game unless they updating
a game files

Thanks for the tips. I do use Windows 10. I had already set the resolution to that of the monitor (which is 1920 x 1080, as you guessed). I do not have any Xbox settings in the Settings page. I don't have any sort of console.

I found the game in the file system and ran it directly, including running it as an administrator. It still crashes, although after a few turns rather than in the middle of the first turn. It even crashed when I didn't do anything for a bit (I had gotten up to do something else and came back to a crashed game).

Any other ideas?

Thanks again.

your welcome but you misunderstand my point, in windows 10 new settings (not the old
control panel) they created a new GUI settings page, start>gear icon> this will open a
new settings page where you can change all settings, currently there's two version of
settings/control panel on windows 10, u can still access the good old control panel
from searching on cortana or click gear icon on start menu for new version

by the way, Windows 10 is cancer, upgrading to win10 is the biggest mistake I did
in my life to be honestly, wish I stayed on win7

I know the difference between Settings and Control Panel. I have no gaming option in my Settings. (Perhaps I have a different version of Windows 10 than you do.)

Thanks.

I fixed it by upgrading Windows 10 to the Fall Creator's version.

10 Home sucks! As all home versions of windows. I went fron 7 pro to 8 pro to 10 pro. No problems, game runs well.

I hadn't played since upgrading to Win 10 I had no problems in Win 8.1. Last week I played again and I was plagued by consistant crashes on the campaign map. But as of today I had a Windows update and that has so far seemed to have fixed it as having played a 2 hour session with no problems

So since the upgrades and with Win 10 being the overplumbed POS it is -- do i have to just give up? Most of my total war games crash or as in ROME II will not even make it past boot screen. This is ridiculous.

In the Medieval Total War 1 "Gold Edition" using win 10. I put in the game the same resolution as the PC. then I go in and I remove all the options (those that are next to the Mini Map) minus the Automatic Saving
I also gave the executable Administrator permissions and I run it with Win7 support(
compatibility)
I achieve that the game only closes(crash) once or twice in total. Before it was impossible, the game went out all the time.

i looked for the exe file in steam MEDIEVAL Total War folder
set as compatibility mode window xp service pack 2
run this program as an administrator
and then ensure the screen resolution for the game matches the screen resolution on your PC.
MEDIEVAL Total War in game Options > Video
ensure you select the strategy map and battle resolution resolution to match your PC default resolution mode
im running on 1280 x 1024 resolution
+ i have the exe set as short cut on desk top and can run with out having to log in to steam
so far game is working fine for me now it seems im runing win 7 but should work on win 10
hope this helps

I have read enough complaints about the game crashing to realize that a lot of standard Windows 10 excuses don't apply here. Such as: it's not my computer's fault. it's not something wrong with the game, and it's not my fault. This is definitely Microsoft's fault, and its POSit beta operating system.
