So if you want a good sword, it does not matter which one you pick to upgrade, just grab one that have the mods you want.
Personal experience: dont bother grinding for ultimate weapon, just find one with effects that suit your needs. like cursed (flat dmg bonus) and vicious ? (crit dmg bonus) and add 3rd effect of your choice (i love armour piercing because i play on hard).
Point is that difference between same maxed yellow weapons is unnoticeable. Who cares about 10-50 additional damage, when you one-shot everything anyway.
Whats better..?
120 armor pen is a must on hard to negate hex of tenacity(? i played long ago sry) armor bonus.
crit and flat damage are connected. you get highest crit damage when crit and dmg bonuses are equall.(e.g. 3x dmg * 3x crit = 9xBase, 2x dmg * 4x crit = 8xBase).
Then you remember incorrectly.. There are enemies that are immune to crit.damage.
