Reason to play Hardcore?
So i like playing hardcore and me and my friends went into hardcore mode and it was nothing different.
When he died he just respawned and kept playing and nothing exclusive dropped in hardcore etc.

Well, I have never played a game where you get "extra rewards" because you are playing on hardcore. It is only meant to challenge players, people feel more rewarded for playing in a mode that says they are hardcore. Some find it more fun that they could lose that character forever (including myself).
Right, not exactly lost, as you may have noticed when he spawn he wasn't able to play with you (unless you have died too) because in this game your character doesn't die, he just becomes "softcore", "scrub" or whatever you want to call it. He's not labeled as badass anymore.

For me it's about the thrill. Normal mode you can just keep running yourself into the packs of mobs and take down their life a little at a time, respawn, rinse repeat. In hardcore you have to watch your life like it's the most important thing in the world. You have to know what abilities you chose and how they will make you live that .5 seconds longer before the much needed cooldown finishes so you can keep going.

Hardcore makes the game more exciting because of the specter of death looming over your shoulder knowing one slip up, a horrible elite pack combination and it's all over but the crying (and making a new character). without that the game is just a grind.

I get the part where you get labeled as a "softcore" character but the thing is he was still able to die hundreds of times while playing with me while i was still a hardcore character.

I did not die a single time when he died many times and just respawned and kept on playing with me on hard (Hardcore)

There's one achievement you can get for finishing the game as a character who hasn't died once if you'd like a concrete reward. It is pretty much for bragging rights, though.

How long would a Hardcore speedrun take? I am thinking of doing it, but if its too much of a bother I will just keep farming gear for my single character instead.

Late to the party, but you can speedrun the story within 3 hours of play if you can find a build centered around sustainable legendary weapons and have a good selection of cards stocked up. This is pretty easy due to how mobs scale with your level.

When I did it, I finished the story in 2ish hours at lvl 16 on a toon which used a hp/hit scythe build up until adrian, then went straight to crit build with the legendary sword Storm. I died ~6 times during this run and I was able to skip almost all mobs I didn't have to kill using a "increased dodge distance" wicked card + blademaster + blink + lucky rabbit's foot to sustain the blinking and blademaster regen.
My deaths were all at boss encounters which forced you to restart the entire encounter upon death **** apocalypse or at Shunned Manor due to vampires pulling you into a very harsh gangbang.

Note: I had all hexes on at lvl 12; and you can't enter Broodmother's Den until lvl 10. I may have actually gone deathless if I kept my hexes off.

Even later to the party ;)
Speedruns are usually done from start to finish with stuff you get during the run, which means no legendaries from stash. If you did a run with equipment you prepared beforehand, your speedrun would belong to a different category.
