As for what mike said, he is wrong (sy mike :) ). I have three end game characters and i feel much much more powerful than early or midgame. Its all about knowing the game mechanics and how to combine the different gear you have in order to improve your build. That and you personal skill level with the game ( knowing mobs attack patterns, better chracter control ect,)
I have put over a hundred hours into this game because I keep coming back to it and I forget what it becomes once you get a little higher up in level. Scaling is highly redacted.
This game could have been so good if not for just a few small but fundamental changes.
Like Sir.Tomato said the game seems to just throw tougher versions of enemies at you at higher levels. These enemies will hit harder, have more armor and may have demon power or two that they'll use against you.
This means that you can't really out level enemies in this game but you can outpower them with good gear and build and is pretty crucial in higher levels and hard mode.
If enemies feel spongy then you've likely neglected armor penetration. Without it many enemies will just deflect most of your hits drastically reducing your damage output. On Hardmode even small spiders can have something like 150 armor and some elite enemies can have something like 300+ meaning you'll deal something like 1/5 or 1/10 of your damage most of the time.
There are few ways to get more armor penetration with the most obvious being The beast divinity card that gives up to 90 armor penetration at level 4. Divine Destiny cards can also provide +20 armor penetration which is probably one of the best if not the best divine modifier for card. Some weapon types like Rapier(100), lightning gun(50) and scythe(25) also have some armor penetration built in. Weapons can also roll armor penetration twice but generally you'd probably want something like Cursed + armor penetration.
The thing that makes Demon powers very powerful is the fact that they ignore armor. Some builds may focus building overdrive as fast as possible through critical hits by using tower destiny card and picking item modifiers that increase critical hit chance and attack speed.
In the endgame you might want to use 5 wicked destiny cards +The Devil destiny card (can be obtained at level 50) to get at least 120 armor penetration. Alternatively you could also use The beast and couple divine destiny cards with armor penetration bonus to get same effect. These allow more flexibility with weapon choices.
