"Can't Initialize Video Mode" error

Whenever I try to start the game (inlcuding the original AND the setup .exe's", the game shows up a black screen then I get an error message "WARNING: Can't initialize video mode".

I've tried running the game with various options in the Gefore control panel (including disabling SLI), as well as running the game in admin mode and in different compatability modes - also disabling desktop composition etc. etc. but with no luck

I've got:

i7 3770K
16GB DDR3 RAM
2 x GTX 580s
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

Anyone else have this issue or know of any sollutions?

Searching online yielded no results unfortunately =(

I had the same problem.

I managed to fix it by deleting the Smersh_MT folder found in:

x:\Users\*your name here*\Documents\My Games

You should try to select your video mode manually. For this you will need to find SmershSetup.exe , run it and select your desired mode. Usually it will be located in the game install folder.

For steam version:

1. Go to your game library and right click Death to Spies and select Properties.
2. Select the local files Tab
3. Select Browse local Files.

and you should see it right near Smersh (the actual game executible file).

when you run SmershSetup.exe, the game starts, not the settings menu. why is the settings menu not working?
