Game doesn`t work or Crashes? Here`s how to fix it
Welcome to Knights of the Crusades, and if you are reading this post I`m guessing you're off to a bad start . Please keep in mind that these bugs only effect a small % of our players. But I`m fully dedicated to making sure everyone can run the game, and will do everything I can to help.

Well lets try to get this resolved for you now shall we. Please check below for various symptoms and solutions.

If this guide doesn't help - please reply here or make a new post, you can expect me to reply within a day max.

Game Crashes on the First Run
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/kotc/

  • In that folder, locate and delete file called local_saved_data

  • In that folder open a file called local_saved_data. You can edit it with any text editor (right click - open with - Notepad, or any other similar program)

  • Inside the file you`ll fine two strings <v name="ScreenResolutionX" and <v name="ScreenResolutionY"

  • Now edit these strings and enter same values as your desktop resolution.
    For example for 4k:
    <v name="ScreenResolutionX" type="float">3840.000000</v>
    <v name="ScreenResolutionY" type="float">2160.000000</v>

    Or for 1080:
    <v name="ScreenResolutionX" type="float">1920.000000</v>
    <v name="ScreenResolutionY" type="float">1080.000000</v>

  • Note: If you can`t find that folder - you will need to enable Show Hidden Files - here`s a guide: https://support.microsoft.com/en-ca/help/4028316/windows-view-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows-10

Other startup crash solutions
  • Restart your PC - surprisingly this fixes a lot of startup issues

  • Disconnect headset/earphones, and reset Audio settings or restart PC

  • Temporary set main display windows desktop resolution to 1080 for the first start of the game

  • Temporary disable Anti Virus and Firewall - and if that works set KotC.exe as exception

I played fine, but now it crashes on start-up, or loading campaign
If the game has stopped loading or you get a crash when trying to load your campaign, please follow these steps. This is a very rare issue caused by Steam client not properly updating the game after a patch.

1) Revalidate the game
  • Open Steam find Knights of the Crusades in the Library
  • Right click on the game name, and go to Game Properties
  • In Game properties click on Local Files, and select Re-validate game files.

2) Delete the Local Saved Data File
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/kotc/
  • In that folder, locate and delete file called local_saved_data

3) Set Correct Permissions for Temp Game Files
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/kotc/, Right click on the kotc folder, and select Properties
  • Un-click Read-Only, and click Apply. Select to all folders and sub-folders when prompted.
  • Set Administrative Permissions

4) Delete your entire KotC user folder
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/kotc/
  • Delete most of the contents of that KotC folder, but you might want to leave you campaign saves
  • Note: Do not delete the CampaignX files (i.e. Campaign1002) if you wish to keep you campaign save files

That didn`t help? Please let me know
After the crash, please locate your log file and share it with me. I try to reply to all posts within a day or two max.
  • Navigate to C:/users/YOUR USERNAME/AppData/local/kotc/
  • In that folder, locate Log1.txt file
  • Open it, copy the last 4-5 lines, and reply here with information about the crash and these last few lines from the log1 file.
