Ship Names
I assume we'll be able to name our ships. Does anyone have anything definate on this?

So assuming you can, what are you guys planning to name your ship?

We'll see the usual Enterprise, Galactica etc I'm sure. How about Millenium Firefly? Doesn't quite work!

I plan to call my ship "The Painted Doll" after my crew of Companions...

I'll take 13 over 7 anyday.

Personal taboo or is there a mythology around the number 7 I don't know?

Also, sorry, I hadn't really meant to derail the spirit of the thread. So, going back to ship names I also like something in the Juno variety because it is the latinate for Hera (where Serenity Valley is). It isn't quite as loaded as directly referencing the planet's name, but the connection is definitely there.

Thus, something like Iunonis Zephyrus would, if I've done my declension right, be Juno's western wind, or, more to the point, Juno's revitalizing wind when the connotations are added.

Zephyrus is the Greek embodiement of the western wind, yes. As for the number 7, it's been considered lucky for a long time, I think since the Greeks or Romans, though I can't exactly remember.

@northtreker

If your post was aimed at me, I have always just had better luck experiences associated with 13 than 7. Really great days on Friday 13th. That sort of thing. Enough to where I embrace it as my lucky number anyway.

I'm not sure. I think there are associations in the Abrahamic tradition with 7 being lucky, days to create the world and so forth, but I thought vukdawg seemed to be implying that 7 was unlucky (or at least less more unlucky than 13). Zephyrus was the aeolian responsible for the western wind, yes, but the connotations run a little deeper. The western wind was seen as blowing in spring, and bringing life back in after the winter. Its derivate, Zephyrine, was popular for a time in France for young women for much the same reason that April and May are in English.

Nahhhh I wasn't dissing "7". I just prefer 13. Nice name idea for my first mate though! I'll call her "Zeph" for short and piss her off, since she hates her first name and prefers her middle name of Anne. :P

Some schools of thought had 13 as a number of destiny. So I guess if you embrace that destiny you'd have more luck than if you didn't.

Well, over my lifetime, I have come to embrace my destiny as a school of hard knocks, hard luck sumbeach... So I guess that makes sense. Hells, I'm still on the right side of the dirt. *winks*

Thinking about ship names. Which do you prefer:
宁静水域 Tranquil waters
or
平静水域 Calm waters

As in still waters (run deep)

Is there a better way at getting at "still" while holding to the right feeling?
vukdawg 3 Thg03, 2015 @ 5:41pm
Well, only the first symbol changes. Perhaps research something like "Stand Still" and see what the ideogram for "still" is and transpose it? I don't know enough to suggest anything better than that.
