Hitboxes for cockpits
Other than the atlas (which is confusing because only the left "eye" is considered the cockpit) I am able to see and aim at enemy glass well (COR-7A twin binaries and 7x zoom) but it seems that even though I am pointing right at the pilot's noggin inside the cockpit, most of the damage is transferred to the better armored CTs instead.

Do I just need to aim better? Do the hitboxes suck? Insight please, and thank you.

The hitboxes are very specific and not always intuitive. Not sure if this reference is still accurate or not. https://mwomercs.com/forums/topic/274181-hitbox-localization-2/

That makes a lot of sense now. Most of those hitboxes are WAY smaller than the actual glass. Thank you!

Yeah, cockpits in this game are meant to be dots on the face, not at all in the design of the glass area

If you ever played Joust in the arcade, MWO headshots make more sense.

Originally, I think during the beta testing, the cockpit hit boxes were as large as the glass, just waaaay too easy to hit. What happened was that good pilots just head shot everyone, as it was by far the easiest way to kill other mechs quickly. The cockpit hit boxes were massively reduced to what they are now, where even expert pilots can’t get them consistently on a moving mech.

i have a feeling the original hitboxes were similar to the current MW5 cockpit hitboxes.

they are very hard to don't register. it does prevent aimbot hackers though

Just as a side-note: this is lore accurate.

They could have taken the path Kesmai did with MPBT Solaris cockpits, eventually. iirc, it was randomized setup so if/when the cockpit was hit, if it did all the damage to the cockpit, or did a little then spread out the damage to other locations or no cockpit hit and spread the damage to adjacent locations.

Reason for that route was that hits were not dependent on the roll of the dice, first if there was a hit or not then where did the damage hit. Pinpoint damage and hitscan, as well as increasing the hitpoints for the cockpit. Originally, via community rules, cockpit and headshots were not allowed in general matches, primarily due to pinpoint damage AND players had no alternate views to fire arm-mounted weapons. If reported, players were given a warning, vacation then finally banned. It was allowed in player operated events/Tourneys if the organizers allowed for it. I remember when it became official to allow head/legs to be legit targets during a SSW Solaris Succession War event. We had one House protest the change by not participating, but House Units/Mercs were not prevented from dropping, with that specific House units signing up as Mercs with the other 4 Houses. Fun times!!!

Well originally (asides video games) most mechs were like an apache or other twin seat aircraft and usually had a pilot/wizo type arrangement. In the atlas, if memory serves, pilots were side by side in sub cockpits.

I think i discovered how. Micro gause weapons are glitched. I almost took the head of an atlas off with them from behind in the testing ground. All hits registered on front not back.
