You can stay generalist viper pure (for example https://mwo.nav-alpha.com/mechlab?b=367a4dc1_VPR-PRIME ) and just be kinda skirmisher. Or swap around pods to say 8 physical 2 explosive slots, and become machine gun + SRM6 mech that specializes in hunting enemy lights (at least until it runs ouf of ammo). Or say 8 energy slots to just be lasvomit skirmisher (6ersl 2 mpl) who stays at sides and mindlessly trades... a waste of Viper's speed imo.
Overall, you have multiple options. So just pick whatever playstyle you like the most (among close-medium range, high speed) and utilize all the capabilities of Omnimech™ to get what you want. Lol I think even poptart longrange could work, tho for say two ERPPCs you'll need to strip a lot of armor and you'll be outclassed by Viper-B thanks to quirks of its So8.
