And to the guy above me: no Locust beats any Assault when both have the same skills.
In solo queue i would recommend a medium or a heavy.
Imho, best mechs for solo play are (only c-bills available variants as of 12/12/2015 are included):
-- Lights --
Locust LCT-1E ( Requires GODLIKE skill )
Firestarter FS9-S
Arctic Cheetah ACH-PRIME ( has best CT quirks of all ACHs, everything else you can change )
RVN-4X
-- Mediums --
Stormcrow ( any but SCR-B, CT quirks worse on that, everything else you can change )
Blackjack BJ-1X
Enforcer ENF-4R
Wolverine WVR-6K
Shadowhawk SHD-2H ( Requires certain skill )
-- Heavies --
Quickdraw QDK-5K or QDK-4G ( slightly more damage and less mobility on second ).
Timberwolf /Hellbringer / Ebon Jaguar - variant doesn't matter.
Thunderbolt TDR-9SE
Grasshopper GHP-5H
-- Assaults --
Battlemaster BLR-3S or BLR-1S ( Requires expensive XL 380 engine or higher )
Banshee BNS-3M ( Requires expensive XL 380 engine or higher )
All loaded with different combinations of Small Pulse/Medium/Medium Pulse/ER Medium/Large Pulse Lasers except the SHD, which runs AC/5s or AC/2s.
To all who just read this: best here means overall most effective (winrate, damage output, kdr etc potential) as seen by me, not most fun to play for you. There're numerous non-laserboat mechs in the game which are also quite good, like Banshee BNS-3E or Highlander HGN-732B, as well as non-laserboat configurations for some of the listed, which are fun to play. But TS asked what the BEST chassis are :)
In short: no.
That being said it's harder to carry PUGs in light mechs than in medium and heavy mechs. You certainly can, and in a big way, it just takes more experience and practice. Also medium and heavy mechs are easiest to learn the game in because they are the most fexible. My advice would be to play some games in mediums for a start then decide if you want more speed and agility or less and more firepower and switch up accordingly.
Don't spend your CBills till you spend some time in each class and see what feels more comfortable.
locust - one of the fastest in the game
urban mech - only one with 360 torso rotation
it is known.
there are no robots in this game.
you can just come out of nowehere hit with a volley of missiles, jump over him hit him again and then just keep darting in and out hitting with 18 short range missiles which fire like a shotgun spread.ive done over 600 damage a match in this mech and by no means am i a superlative pilot
its depending on your play style and whishes
Sure people will say you the pilot matters, but there are still some mechs easier to play good than others and some have more potential than others.
That almost a Stock UrbanMech UM-R60L 30tons (only Add EndoSteel and remove the extra Single heatsink to add 2.5 tons of AC 20 ammo)
as you can see I was 2nd Highest Damage & Match score in that game the mech Pilot that beat me out was a 100ton Direwolf.
P.S. the UrbanMech is the underdog of Battletech or another way to look at it the VW-Bug of battletech they where one of the cheapest Mechs ever made.
I would say the light class in general if you're dedicated enough to actually become good with them....
If you're not then go with a clan heavy or clan medium mech if you want "pretty much better than everything else"
Devs have, lets say issues, with balancing Clan mechs and Clan tech. Clans won both major events in this game and pretty much all competitive teams are Clans because when everyone uses the best mechs the game is balanced. The upcoming Jenner IIC and Hunchback IIC will be at the same level so you can buy those two as the "starter" pack. Heavy performance pack is nice since you get best mech with 30% c-bills earning bonus + lots of other stuff.
A few words about prices. Clan mechs are really not more expensive (C-Bills wise) than Inner Sphere mechs, it's just they come equiped with XL engines which cost more, and clan version of such engine is much better because you don't die when you lose side torso like with IS XL engine.
