Is this anything like that Mech game on the Original Xbox? I remember when you died you could be an actual human and walk around on the ground until you got crushed by a mech

You're thinking of the Mech Assault games, and quite frankly, no. The Mech Assault series was an arcade spin off of the Mechwarrior/Battletech series. These games play almost nothing alike, but exist in the same universe, even if Mech Assault was considered non-canon. You'll see some familiar mechs however.

I enjoyed the Mech Assault series but that means I'm in the minority I think.
