I personally do not use them much, or use 2 and then have backup weapons to help with the burst. They also stop doing damage at +50% range as opposed to regular lasers that will stop doing damage at double the range.
The only effective way to use them is a lance full of beam boats. Otherwise don't bother.
I tried to make them work, but they are simply inferior to other weapons that also require long facetime, like RACs.
The problem is twoforld: first, they're DPS weapons in a cover shooter. They depend on your opponents making big positional mistakes to get their value in a way burst damage weapons don't.
Secondly, they don't pair well with anything. This includes themselves, because they have an abysmally low HSL at 2, so unless you're a light mech you need to take additional weapons systems or you're hilariously undergunned. They're hitscan tracking weapons, so it's inherently awkward to use projectiles with them. And they're long ranged, which makes it awkward to pair smaller lasers or machineguns with them.
Besides that ... not really. Rather pick some large pulse lasers or heavy large lasers.
