Worth it for a new player in 2024?
Hey all
I'm looking at starting MWO, but is it really worth it in 2024? I did play before, waaay back when it first started so have no access to that account and, I assume, it is not the same game these days, not that i can remember much anyway!

Any pointers or advice for a new player?
Many thanks!

No. I tried this again after a 5 year hiatus. It's still the same, broken mess it was back then.

Long queue times, long waiting times after queue + broken AC's and dumb teammates ruin it for me.

90% of the games devolve into lemmings running (counter-) clock wise from each other into circle-fest.

Uninstalled, going back to MW5

So, you gotta take the queue time complaints with a few caveats

1. Different tiers have different matching and tier 1 has the lowest population and tier 5 has the most and they cannot match thus the people who are complain often have a higher tier

2. The different time zones and servers, the common mistake is to turn off all the servers for an optimal experience but as a guy who played Neopets back on dialup, I'm used to a little latency so I use all servers so my wait times are lower and I play at all hours so I know the peak times are very much peak times.

3. The size people play. You can assume most people are using 60 tons or higher so that needs to factor in for wait times.

Otherwise I can sit in the OW2 queue as a healer role and still take 5 minutes and then hop over to MWO and it'll still be about 5 minutes.

Even LoL ARAM takes a few minutes during certain hours

A couple of times a year I look in here to see if anything has changed and to thank my lucky stars that my daughter gifted me a copy of MSFS so that I will never ever be tempted to reinstall this toxic mess of a game.

Did you try the game yet?

1 Month ago i would have said yes but currently im personaly not having a good time with this game anymore.

It still doesnt matter if you are new or a veteran.
Its not a pay to win game.
It all comes down to your team and how you manage your mech.

The biggest issue though is that lately i feel like there are more and more hackers around - having mostly bad matches and really no fun at all.
There are known aimbot-hacks that target specific components and i believe there are also wallhacks around - the normal stuff as with any pvp fps.
It was just never so obvious or present as of lately where you just get destroyed out of nowhere or killed waaay too quick and when you look up what got destroyed ... well sometimes its a giveaway on what happened. (for example getting headshotted or engine destroyed out of 1000 meters with litteraly 1-2 shots - while being in a SMALL mech with ecm or stealth armor).

The developers dont seem to care and the community also becomes more toxic lately with people throwing around their personal issues in the voice chat pulling you down.

Lately its extremely frustrating and no fun. Sadly.

Has anyone else experienced that? Unless it was in the past week or two, I have to say that sounds fabricated. If it was in the past week or so, I couldn't say as I haven't played much.

Yes. Four times in a row I've experienced my mech vaporizing in miliseconds(while previously it was somewhat durable), from shots out of nowhere - and in 2 cases I've moved backward to just see from where the shots are coming - nope, I didn't seen neither the shots nor enemy mechs.

Once I was LRM-ed to death while being in middle of my group, with proximity of building - not only I couldn't spot the direction of the incoming missiles, but also powering down didn't prevented them to hit me continuously. I can understand that already mid-flight salvo could hit me, but not next ones.

I've made few days between these attempts, then uninstalled the MWO, as playing it makes no sense.

You just lack experience and situational awareness. There's a guy up here saying he doesn't need MWO because he has Flight Simulator.

So if you're interested in a slower paced "wester style" mech pvp, unless anyone has any recommendations, this is simply where it's at.

Well, must be something that happens any time I take a break from playing for a couple of weeks. Sorry about that. I will hop back online so I can regulate for anyone's inattentiveness.

It's a firm "maybe". Play a trial mech, see if you like the gameplay loop, use comms because it's fun, join a unit... The most fun part is playing with friends.

This version has an arcade feel to it but the game has never been about it's too late to start playing it.

Every new mech you try will need to be skilled up, even by the old players and the game is team armor attrition, so even if you are up against a tier one bad azz mech, that does not mean they don't die, it just means they die harder and even those are only as good as the team allows it to be via the team. Super bad is just another target on a crappy team of targets.
