When you get your cadet bonus finished, try to buy a couple different heavies and a medium probably. Kintaros have a few builds and are easy to use, very forgiving armour quirks too.
For heavies, you can get the Ebon Jag from this month's event, so use it to play around with clan stuff.
Then try something like a Marauder and maybe an Orion or Quickdraw. Not too expensive and they're pretty versatile. So you can try out different loadouts and stuff while you see what you like.
And don't stress yourself about the pilot tier or tactics or anything. Just aim for doing damage and not dying too quickly. You will get the hang of how to play pretty quickly.
After you have been playing a while if you want to spend some money, try going for the S7 pack or something.
Are there any "new player" missions? I done the tutorial and it has just dumped me into the mech bay with the 4 trial mechs, had a bit of a play in the Academy, do i just go hit Quick play now and off I go? (Once the servers come back, typical!)
They're there forever so people can play the game. They're not bad either. I'm not sure but they probably change them out now and then.
Yeah, mostly people just quick play.
Yep, that's more or less it. I am not actually 100% what the trial mech situation is because I don't use them. But you can use them as much as you want and they used to change them out. I think they still do. Just that now the trial mechs have actually playable builds.
Your first 25 matches, win or lose, come with extra rewards. Enough to get a pretty high end mech, even two if they're on sale.
Yeah. You will start in Tier 5 - the lowest player rank - which means that until you rank up you will largely be playing with and against people who are either beginners or irredeemably bad.

It's F2P. Try it, if you don't like it, don't spend on it.
Time investment.
The game is incredibly free player friendly, you dont even have to spend a dime and you can get everything (the cash only mechs available for ingame currency half a year later).
The community is okay, during my 4 years maybe I encountered 3-4 toxic guys who couldn't bear defeat. But otherwise people are mature, coordination during the game exist,
Lots of event, monthly free mechs and ingame rewards - I think during my 4 years or so I spend 10 USD on a mechs I was interested, currently I have 159 mechs, 47 premium currency ones (hero mechs)
Oh, and what I absolutely like: no ingame RNG. Wherever you aim, the shoots go there and damage is according to the weapon stats.
Its not like the similar arena type of games (Warthunder, world of tanks) where dice roll decides what happens. Here, if you flank a tank you can cause serious damage (armor used to be thin there)
They've added 3 major weapon patches and each one gave us new weapons for both factions and we've got an Innersphere omni in the game which is something people begged for.
The new balance crew are a lot harder to hate than the last two guys and they actually play the game publicly and you can join the balance discord and talk with people
Follow a twitch streamer or yt personality like Baradul or B33f or TTB or Father Bill or anyone with a discord and just drop in and play with people
My opinion, you don't need to spend money, but if you want to get a good bang for your buck you'd check out the battle pass mechs because you don't have time limit and you can finish it in a dozen matchs (unless you're scoring low?) and it'll give you a ton of Global Skill points to use on it or any mech and paint and the mechs themselves are more powerful than any pack hero
Good luck!
I got a bit bored of the games repetitiveness and lack of competitiveness and the fact that the game often crashes when I alt tabbed but boy was it fun as a new player.
