If you're not worried about damage... I do happen to know a poking locust build if you're interested that can work at over 1000 meters going at 153 speed...
Mind you, the Gauss rifle is heavy and slow firing. For that reason, a Raven 3L with 2 ERLL and ECM is more popular, even if firing the laser gives away your position.
If you are new to the game, do not make any decision to buy a mech while you still get Cadet bonus. And keep piloting all the Trail mechs, even if you believe you already have found what you want to do.. you might not end up liking something else more.
Lasers are terrible for sniping. Not only do they give away your position, but also do they require you to maintain the laser on the target for its duration, which can take up to a second.
They are great for poking, tho.
Sniping weapons would be the PPC and the Gauss, imho. While the PPC still has the issue of being visible.
I agree on the Gauss part. Its hard hitting, long range.. and best of all, you do not see it in flight, making it very difficult to make out the shooter if they aren't standing in plain sight.
I would also highlight the Cicada 3M as a Mech that could run a Gauss setup. The Cicada is great for 'poking'.. and the 3M can fit ECM and a Ballistic mount. Its not that common (by my experience with the Cicada) to have someone blow out a torso, meaning you could in theory put a gauss into its Ballistic mount.
It would be worth a try.
CDA-3M: XL Engine 225, DHS (1 added to Right Torso), 2 ML (Center Torso), 1 Gauss (Left Torso) + 2 Tons Ammo (Right Torso), ECM (Left Torso), Armor setup; 16 Head, 8 each Arm, 36 each Leg, 30 Front/10 Rear for Side Torsos, 38 Front/10 Rear for Center Torso, Endosteel Structure, FerroFibrous Armor.
So... like I mentioned... it's really to support Mechs and be a Sniper with limited ammunition. 2 Tons... meaning if you miss a shot that's less damage you do supporting your team.
in all honesty... a Blackjack can be a better sniper role for Medium than a Cicada
I am talking straight 'sniper' configuration.. The way the Cicada is built, you would only need to expose like 1/4 of the mech and be able to snipe at people. Due to the tiny fraction of mech you'd expose you'd probably be very, very hard to detect.
Being able to hide so completely is actually why i thought of it. I have no idea if it would work out in the game, nor would i be one to try (just not my cup of tea). But i have ran my Cicada with double ER Large Lasers poking over hills. And you are very, very hard to hit if you do that. Even had a long distance shootout with a Timberwolf on the polar map... he barely hit me, and most of his shots went into the dirt in front of me. (But i also was a lot faster than the above mech to relocate and whatnot)... i wouldn't want to play a sniper mech, in a game where pilots like me exist, that take quite a lot of pleasure of hunting those snipers down with our light mechs. Its essentially a free kill just like an 'only LRM' boat.
Ty ishan451 and grendel408 and spaceninjapirate and scraplorn prime commonds.
So should I buy or wait ?
Take it with a grain of salt.. as i said i never played the mech in that configuration. I only played it poking over hill tops with lasers... and the Cicada is basically a shoebox on legs.
If it is the best, i can't tell you.. as i am not a 'sniper' type of person. I like being mobile.
I'd definitely wait. I assume there should be a new sale next week and unless you are in a hurry, it might not be a bad idea to wait at the very least to see which mechs go on sale. Also they've given out Cicada's as Challenge rewards and loyalty rewards in the past.
I'd probably start with the Blackjack BJ-1 or the Jaegermech JM6-A. The Cicada is very very niche and if you do not like it as sniper, you'll probably be stuck with a wasted mech. At least the BJ and Jaeger can be refitted for something else.
i also hope for sale mechbay

umm cataphract has a good quirks for a gauss mech build
Your guess is as good as mine. But the last sale just ended yesterday and so far they have had some kind of sale every 1-2 weeks.
