clan equipment can only be put on clan mechs, so you need to own one of those first

Don't see, or don't understand which ones are and which ones aren't?

You can filter the Mechs in the Store to show only Clan Mechs.

Buying Clan Mechs with Real Money/From the PGI Website:
1 - Click this link[mwomercs.com]
2 - Select the pack of your choice (order is bottom to top in order of release time/availability):
Clans
Clan Wave II
Clan Wave III
Origins IIc
Kodiak
Viper (Pre-Purchase only!!! Delivered on 19 July 2016)
Night Gyr (Pre-Purchase only!!! Delivered on 20 September 2016)
3 - Follow on-screen instructions to complete your purchase
4 - Mechs/Mech Packs that are available will be delivered automatically within 30 minutes of payment going through. Mechs/Mech Packs that are for Pre-Order will be delivered on their advertised date

Buying Clan Mechs with In-Game Currency (C-Bills or MC):
1 - Log into the game
2 - Click the yellow "Store" button in the upper middle of the screen
3 - Click the "Battlemechs" button on the upper right side of the screen
4 - Select your mech(s) of choice from the list below:
Light Mechs:
Adder, Arctic Cheetah, Jenner IIc, Kit Fox, Mist Lynx
Medium Mechs:
Hunchback IIc, Ice Ferret, Nova, Shadow Cat, Stormcrow
Heavy Mechs:
Ebon Jaguar, Hellbringer, Mad Dog, Orion IIc, Summoner, Timber Wolf
Assault Mechs:
Dire Wolf, Executioner, Gargoyle, Highlander IIc, Warhawk
5 - Click the yellow "Buy" button on the variant you want to purchase (WARNING! you must have open/available Mech Bays!!!)
6 - Select the type of payment (MC or C-Bills)
Note: This may not be an option pending your available funds

Other points of note:
- All of the presently available mechs *except* the Kodiak and the IIc mechs (that is, any mech with IIc as part of its name, such as Hunchback IIc) are Omnimechs, meaning you can swap out the different locations (head, arms, side torsos and legs) from other variants in the same way as swapping out weapons (the variant that you are using for experience and such is determined by the Center Torso).
The advantage here is that you can customize hardpoints/available weapons across to suit your taste...the drawback is that there are a number of things you cannot change, such as engines and chassis upgrades (FF or Endo).

- Most upgrades (Double Heat-Sinks, Ferro-Fibrus Armor, etc) and equipment (Engine, MASC and Jump Jets) are hard-locked into the omnipod and cannot be changed. Pieces of equipment that you cannot change will appear grey in color, similar to actuators, live support, etc.

- Some upgrades (Artemis) and equipment (Targeting Computers, ECM) are changeable. Those that are will appear light blue in color just like normal.

- Clan BattleMechs (Kodiak and IIc Mechs) behave like Inner Sphere mechs when it comes to customization. This means that you can NOT swap out omnipods like you can with OmniMechs. These mechs also have the option of making use of Standard Engines you may already own (which can be convenient)...but NOT any XL Engines. You will have to purchase Clan XL Engines.

I hope this helps.

I feel that threads like this would stop being made both here and on the official forum if PGI put a clan symbol behind the clan robots, and an IS symbol behind the IS robots.

Agreed... and the ability to sort IS/Clan mechs in the store in the same manner you can for your mechbays.

...though I will admit, I only go into the in-game store when responding to posts like this because I have far more mechs than what I know what to do with...

well, the most basic answer is: to get clan weapons you need a clan mech. then you get them automatically when you enter the mechlab

those are available for C-bils, MC and real money (your choice what to use, although some mechs are not available in all payment methods), either from the website (only real for real money there) or in the in game store (tab on the top corner of your screen). but generally clan mechs are a bit more expensice than IS one. also their equipement usually is a bit more expensive. but they do have their advantages (and also their disadvantages)
