The Solaris 7 Hero Pack is purchasable if you plan on owning some cool mechs (7 of them).
Yes, the mechs are purchasable with RL money. But you get trial mechs for free across different weight classes that you can use for Quick Play matches. These can't be upgraded, customized or saved. They'll change over time. These are good to get your feet wet with different mechs.
Some mech variants can be purchased with in-game currency but I doubt you can do it right away. But after your first 25 games, you'll complete the Cadet requirements and get some good amount of C-Bills and GXP. GXP is something that you can use to get skill points for mechs you own but haven't gained any XP on them whereas XP can't be shared. You can convert XP from any mech to GXP but that costs RL money.
Just note that this game is grind-y. I purchased the Solaris 7 pack and got 30 days of premium time, i.e., double exp and so on. Plus the mechs that I got from the pack all have 30% C-bill boost. 'Cause of that, the game doesn't feel like a chore when it comes to customizing and trying new builds. Plus, 'cause I bought that pack at the right time, I qualified for the loyalty mech where I got a nice light mech, the Javelin 11F for free and it has 30% C-bill boost as well.
If you plan on buying some packages with RL money, keep an eye out for price cuts and also, which package qualifies for what and how much premium time they come with.
Hero mechs are the only ones that are always RL cash (Or the RL cash in game equivilant called MC) but the dead horse the developers keep riding is the release method of new mechs in a attempt to squeeze more money out of the playerbase. Way it works is they announce a new mech, show off some art for it and various rewards for 'early purchase' and give a release date which is I think a few months later. Once it arrives in game at first only the people that bought it for RL cash get it (As is the case with the vapor eagle right now) and later it will be available as well in game but for the premium curency MC (IE the Flea right now) and then later the standard variants will be available for C-bills the 'free' grindy currency. So if you want to get the eagle right now you will need to go to the website and hit up the 'store' and scroll down just a smigin you should see pictures of mechs for me its the top right one (its colored red and black in the drawing).
Oh thats just PGI, you will get used to (or fed up with) them doing as little as possible. They have a wiki now, didnt tell anyone about it - just sort of showed up one day. (Though I dont think it covers purchases.)
No, it does not, but you have a quite helpful community around here, if you have questions. Also there are not one but two Reddits dedicated to the game and the official forums of course. All various levels of elitists.
The Steam forums are basically just newbies and Vets that look to help newbies, because... well there are no devs or mods here, so nobody hangs out in the Steam forums.
But alas... if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. The tone around the forum is usually dependent on the tone of the post. And anyone that asks for advise usually gets it in spades.
MWO is the 12 vs 12 game mode where you can get stomped by the always the same full skilled meta mechs while leveling up.
12 vs 12 is actually more 1 vs 11 stoopid teammates and 12 enemys who cheat by using VOIP and teamwork while your "teammates" are even to dumb to use the R key if thier live depends on aiming for the damaged parts
My advice, Use the training grounds and put a good 3-4 hours in before you try matches. It is very helpfull to learn the maps before people are shooting at you. You also can get the hang of moving and shooting, along with heat.
happy gaming!
Looks new, maybe PGI got an intern who did it as proof of skills... ;-) And in typical PGI style they didn't tell anybody about it.
