Advice on how to build my Ebon Jaguar
I've been trying desperately since I bought an Ebon Jaguar to make it... well... good. I've tried laser, autocannon and missile heavy setups and nothing really seems to work, plus the mech itself seems to die really easily. (Note: It's an EBJ-A, clan tech)
It seems kind of weird, 'cos I was using a Crab before with 3 heavy lasers and it seemed to seriously take a beating before it finally died, but my Ebon Jaguar seems to explode if another mech so much as looks at it, which makes no sense to me 'cos the Crab is only a medium mech and the Ebon Jaguar is a heavy. Is it just a case that the Ebon Jaguar takes more hits because of it's larger size or am I missing something?

Could anyone suggest a good weapon setup for this and maybe provide some idea or answer to why it dies so much faster?

The question is how you are really using it.

Big thing about the Ebon Jaguar is that it is no Front Line Mech With how it's hitboxes are and being a Clan wich has very low structure, overall like the Hellbringer you are going to get recked. The way the Crab is built makes it easier to splash damage between CT, ST and Arms. The EBJ is much more pancake so spreading the damage is much harder.

The Role for it is turning it into a Range Unit, third line to Second Line. The most common builds that I have seen for the mech which have gone some good is Guass Rifle with PPC or Gauss Rifle with 2 ER Large. Really good build if you like to snipe.

Ah, thanks for the info!

I never thought to take structure in to account. I fully upgraded all the armour and structure on my Crab as high as it would go where as the EBJ is locked how it is, so that makes a lot more sense. I'll try slapping a Gauss Rifle on and see how it goes!

Ebon Jaguar, and most clan mechs, are generally much less durable than IS mechs and have a focus on mid-long range combat.

Many people run the Ebon Jaguar mid range with 6 ER medium lasers and 2 large pulse lasers, giving it effective engagement ranges of 400-500m usually.

What I usually do in my EBJ, is find a somewhat mobile assault and make it my new best friend. Move alonside it and hit what comes a long (or clear a path for the assault). I am now using dual HLL's with EML's or MLL's. Max out survival skills and keep a 300-500 yard range and don't forget to duck when needed; it's a support mech for me at least.

Ebon CT is pretty large and it's "long", so twisting can't really shield it and the higher tier you get, the more your opponents know to target you, see that your CT is worn and then even when you twist they can hit the nose. It's rather similiar as why Jenners are consided weak, too easy to kill by CT shots.

Ebon has good tonnage, speed and flexible good hardpoints though.

You can use ST pods for several builds and those weapon will go above cockpit very high. When you equip the mech use the "Column" view mode to see weapon locations. With energy weapons you might need to pad the first hardpoint with some useless low weight laser to push the rest into the shoulder box.

If you use those high mounts use it like Hellbringer or Battlemaster, just peek little over a ridge to see enemy, fire and then pull back. Left torso can give you two high energy mounts, right torso can give one high ballistic or one high energy. Due to ghost heat using one gauss two PPC is not very effective anymore, firing them takes too long and is demanding in timing. I don't know how great is like gauss and two large pulse, probably not that great but at least you can practice not dying fast.

ER-M large pulse boat is probably good. You can also have 3UAC5 and a lot of ammo to shoot well outside of your optimal range.

recently bought one myself (EBJ-A) and the way i'm playing it, its been extremely fun to work with...currently have it built as a medium range direct fire support with a small bit of long range capabilities...

here's a link[mwo.smurfy-net.de] to my current build. you can probably replace the right arm lasers for a pair of heat sinks to make it run a bit cooler

a few tips with it though is that you never front line with the thing, its too soft for it, just stay behind the tankier mechs... it can brawl fine but not really recommended

That small pulse laser..... what do you have a small pulse laser for on that thing?

You also have no ammo for the LBX2s.

I suggest you exchange the ER Mediums and the small pulse for Quad ER Smalls. You can then fire the Heavy Mediums followed by the ER Smalls. You'll have a ton more for ammo...

Maybe trade the LBX2's and the 10 for Tripple 5s. Or better yet... uAC/5s...

Along this line: EBJ-A[mwo.smurfy-net.de] :)
