I usually just do challenge runs on highest difficulty using only stock mechs or only equipment that I get from salvage, or using just a light medium mech the entire time.
There's really not much of a wrong way to play it. If you want to go full try hard meta then just get a mech that can jump jet with some gauss and ERPPCs and blow enemies out of the water without them being able to fight back. Alternatively just run around with a super high powered brawler and roll stuff over up close.
Heatsinks in MWO offer dimishing returns, and Double Heatsinks, contrary to their name, are only 1,4 times as effective as regular Heatsinks.
All this is done in an effort to sell you cool shots.... well provide incentive to use cool shots. MW4 iirc, been a while, uses the proper heat mechanic, where if you have 3 heat sinks and fire a medium laser (generates 3 heat) your Mech's heat doesn't raise. Just like the table top you basically can take actions that generate a certain amount of heat "for free" with each heatsink, without getting hot.
So unlike MWO where firing a Large Laser will always drive up your heat, and then have it dissapate, in MW4, iirc, you will be able to keep firing that Large laser indefinitely.
On the armor section always choose FF since the other 2 are ♥♥♥♥ (in my humble opinion).
On the optionals (ECM, LAMS, BAP, Jumpjets,...) arent worth it the tonnage on singleplayer. The mech speed is also dealt the same way heatsinks are.
Your mercs get better the more missions they get in, i usually go for ppl with high sensor skills (blind skills is a bonus) and ♥♥♥♥ gunnery and piloting since the later 2 can get up pretty fast. On later missions you can run anything you want but it must pack a punch, your mercs dont. On late game give them at very least a good heavy (Loki, Thor, BKnight, Argus can be found early midgame).
Your heat affect your speed and it will make your hud go shaky.
ON WEAPONS SIDE
For your lances give them a Laser boat with at least 70 heatsink efficiency. Using balistics/missiles on their mechs is 90% a waste of tonnage.
IS lasers are your best buddies when it comes to balancing damage and heat. Unless i need for a specific mission or setup i dont use Clan ER Lasers. Using IS Lasers can save you more tonnage on heatsinks than adding for Clan ones.
MPL rocks on certain mechs (Nova Cat Im looking at you).
LRMs dont have minimum range, theyre amazing. ATM, SRM (this one also heats up the enemy mech), Rockets and Arrow4, Artemis versions o LRM and Arrow4 are good since Artemis Missiles lock on pretty fast. Never use ATMextended/CSTRK/INFERNO theyre ♥♥♥♥.
On ballistics is all about clan since they got less tonnage than the IS counterpart. Never use HyperAC theyre crap.
All variations of AC2/AC5 except rotary are great early game and pretty crap even massed late game.
AC10 is a solid weapon, AC20 not so much. LBX10 and 20 are amazing weapons you'll be surprised on how many cockpit kill you can get with these. UAC10 is also good, overshadowed by LBX10. UAC20 is a monster... MONSTER pack 2 of these and you be CTing anything in less than 20seconds.
Cant say much for Gauss since i dont like them minus the HeavyGauss, thats a beast of a gun.
My love on ballistics tho is for the LongTom one is overkill and 2 its just too much fun, too bad you cant run those on missions since your teammates usually hug the enemy.
Close and personal is your best approach with balistics, the hitboxes are iffy at best. There are times you hit the dead center of a Fafnir and the game register a side torso shot.
Theres no linked ammo for balistics or missiles, you need to put ammo in each armament (they come with the basic 1ton in them for no cost).
The mektek mekpak mod is pretty standard and should come with it if you downloaded it from somewhere rather than using an original CD. Otherwise I haven't used any mods in the game other than that one, its rather extensive.
I know there are texture mods out there somewhere, but I never looked into getting any myself and have no idea if anyone is even hosting them anywhere anymore.
well we may not agree that CSM auto cannon needs nerfed, but at least we agree ghost heat is bad.
