Dragon - Some thoughts (Video included)
Let me tell you, I’ve bought and sold Dragons a few times, not knowing what to do with them, and wondering if such a boxy mech was too large a target.

However I like the idea of Dragons and bought Fang (unfortunately a mech that can only be got with real money).

For me Fang has...

1) Hardpoints that I like

2) -15% to energy heat, hence I use 2 large pulse lasers (saves me 1.1 heat per shot, dropping from 7.25 to 6.16)

3) +15% energy cooldown, going from 3 seconds to 3.45,which slows down heating, but decreases damage output (so good and bad)

EDIT: Curccu on MWO forum has pointed out to me that it's -15% energy cool-down not +15%, making it fire at 2.55 not 3.45 cooldown. Smurfy has the quirk in red btw.

This makes Fang get hotter quicker, but do more damage in shorter space of time.

Yet for a long time I did not know what to do with it. My damage was low and I could not find a way to be effective with it. Then one day I made the build in the video, and it revolutionised how I see Dragons.

First off they can achieve a good balance of speed, firepower and armour, but don’t forget to manage heat.

At 60 tons it has the armour and structure of a heavy mech, but being entry level to that weight class means I use it as if it was a medium mech, especially when it comes to armour, though it does get good structure buffs.

This means I want to keep it out of direct combat when possible.

Yet on another level I regard it as a mini-assault mech, as it can go toe-to-toe with mediums and heavies.

Overall I think it is a very good mech, but, and I re-iterate to stress the point, the main obstacle for me was understanding the Dragon in the first place, and that took a long time.

Of course, before buying any mech you should play around with the build, either using the mech lab or smurfy, as I wouldn’t want new players to waste their c-bills.

Here is a link to Smurfy: https://mwo.smurfy-net.de/

And here is the video.

On this occasion I was listening to Tears for Fears

Anyway, do you have any thoughts on the Dragon?

The dragons speed and durability make them a great workhorse on a team. Fang has good hard point locations as well if I remember correctly.

Cool match.

I like the Dragon and enjoyed playing it back during the days of 8v8. I haven't played it since though. I keep telling myself that I'll buy and run one again like the "good ol' days," but I never do.

I think of it as the IS Summoner/Linebacker. Or the opposite of what the Orion is.

Not a big fan of it. Definitely got much better thanks to Light Engine being a thing.

As for the Flame... UAC20 or heavy gauss in the left torso and hope for the best.

i like the Fang with UAC20+2lpl's Runs hot but hits nice..

The 5N is it? the one with 3 slots in the arm is a top comp mech as well. You can even drop a bit of speed and use an STD and then Dead side your left.

Those with 3 ballistics in an arm always make me laugh.

The 5N is pretty funny for organized/competetive drops. You can mass 5Ns, which have never been considered OP in QP, and just pick apart the enemy team with a firing line of UAC-5s.

I always wondered how to make that work without the arm getting blown off quickly, till I saw this video

Which doesn’t make me think they’re amazing, but kind of makes me want one anyway, if only to try that dragon shoulder charge move (see 6m and on).

You can see in the video that most opponents didn't really fire at him and when they did they sprayed it all over. It was pure luck that he didn't lose his important sidetorso early on. That enemy Highlander IIC being rather incompetent also helped him big time.

Yeah the shoulder move is a cool thing. Something I am gonna try out with my Executioner.

I got a big aesthetic problem with it also. It looks like a tumor.

well you are in t3 atm, it works well there, but as soon as you play vs real competent players the dragon turns into a meme:

you want exploding CT's, because thats how you get exploding CT's.
