You really want UNIT play if your going to play with your friend..
as for split into different squads are you talking lances? if so, it means nothing, just get together in the match, Or as in chat before hand if you can swap lances with the command thing, that way you can earn a bit extra C-bills for being near your lancemate, but its really not much money at all.
really all you miss is Lance chat, thats it./
Group Que ques you against and with other groups. Its quite underutilized as its recommended to use LFG feature and find a full group, otherwise you need to wait until groups of sufficient configuration will que up.
It doesn't split you into other groups, it splits you into lances according to the usual tonnage split. Meaning 1-3 lights +1 medium in Alpha Lance, 2 mediums + 2heavies in Bravo and 3 assaults + 1 heavy in Charlie. This is how the matchmaker tries to place everyone. If there are not enough types of mechs (after a certain time) it loosens this restriction. But if you drop in a light mech and your friend in an assault, its unlikely you will ever be placed in the same group. Ever.
You should still be in the same group... just walk over to your friend.
then you will get bonuses for staying in formation, just make sure you don't split up other friends... if you do oh well, once you relinquish command they can adjust themselves.
Only if the other 2 of your lance died or are nearby as well. Just 2 of 4 working together is not enough to trigger it as long as all 4 are alive.
Lance in formation bonuses are not only hard to get, unless you have a dedicated team of 4, but also not really worthwhile. You can just as well pair a light + heavy/assault or a medium + assault and get proximity boni. More reliable and works all match with 2 mechs.
better to have a chance of bonus... think about it if you are leaving the other lance to meet up your friend in the other lance you are destroying bonuses for more then just you and your friend.
adjust the lance takes two seconds, not that it really matters but a bonus is a bonus.
Yeah, i felt like you did a long time as well,... but honestly i stopped. As light and medium pilot i am frequently in alpha lance and we often would go Wolfpacking. Its nice when it works, but in my experience you are more likely to throw the match for the team, than for it to work out.
In my experience you are better of just deathballing around your Assault than to concern yourself with sticking to your lance. Over all it will ensure more wins for the team than sticking to your lance will. Nothing worse than having your lance caught off, and the team loosing 4 mechs just because you followed the wrong guy down the wrong path.
Lance in formation happens naturally if all coalesce around the heavies... and if someone in the lance goes off script.. there is a 50:50 chance of it not working.. and pulling in all other teammates that followed them.
It comes down to your preference, but as far as i am concerned... i stick to my big guys, defend their flanks and keep their backs safe from the enemy... as well as try to flank the enemy on my own. Sticking to my lance. Its just not worth it.
The matchmaker trys to make up a 12 player team from groups of 2 - 12 players.
That is 10 group sizes (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 & 12) to combine and some of them only allow certain other group sizes (12, 10+2, 9+3,...)
Balancing is the last thing the matchmaker considers in group play...
PGI could fix the size of the group to 4, 8, 12 players.
That would reduce the number of group sizes to 3, and also reduce the number of possible combinations.
But that would players force to invite other players from the looking for group lobby, and no real MWO Player likes that because there are no players in the LFG.
This may be rude, but I have no intrest in building a larger group, just want to be able to play with a friend or two, at relitively random times. Sometimes it's only even for a couple matches, not worth wasting everyone elses time.
You can also try to find more friends to play with.
But yeah if you actually just want to play with a buddy? I highly suggest you go find another game to play. As far as I know, this horrible queue system has been in place since beta and I doubt they'll ever bother to realize how much of a turnoff it is for casual players.
And yes group queue in off hours is positively horrid and an annoyance even at peak hours. What sane person would wait several minutes for a game that will end faster than the queue itself and usually in a spectacular stomp fest?
