Direwhale... i mean Direwolf.
Though if we are going with Quirks, then their is nothing that beats the Atlas Series, as every one of them except the AS7-S. has an extra 150 points of Armor placed onto the mech.
Compared to King Crabs extra 79, Fafnir's extra 38 and the Anihilator's extra 34 armor, the Atlas is pretty much king of Tanking.
Well, there's the highest armour/structure by numbers, and the highest survivability, which is a somewhat different thing. Direwolf may have the most armour for a clan mech in absolute numbers, but it's massive and blocky hit boxes and super slow turning means it simply eats damage wherever the enemy chooses to put it, and dies more easily to concentrated fire than much lighter clan mechs.
It may be the most heavily armored Clan mech, but still far more squishy than the Atlas with it's armor quirks and natural shield arms.
Still, they haven't buffed the whales armor much over the years, probably because it can hold a nice payload, so it is what it is.
It has an obscene amount of firepower after all... can you imagine what that mech would be like if it didn't have the most armor?
Why would they? I think there is a misconception here as to Assaults being meant to stand in the open and take a beating. That is not how they work in MWO. You are supposed to push the enemy, but you do so from cover to cover and you get extra armor in order to get there.
If you want a "why won't it die" mech.. then you need to go to Atlas or Annihilator. Annihilator takes a lot of damage even though it doesn't have, on paper, the most armor, but it has good hitboxes.. until people figure out its big weakspot.
Clan Mechs are supposed to have superior firepower and range... if you want durability you are playing the wrong tech. Innersphere is meant to take a beating and measure up with DPS.
man... i really wish that video file didnt get corrupted... its a perfect example of what a disarmed mech should be doing.
