A Joystick in your left Hand (if you are right handed) to move your mech gives you at least 4 Thumb Buttons, a 4 way ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Hat and a Trigger for Weapon Groups, Jump Jets and Vison.
I use a Mad Catz / Saitek Fly 1:
Triggger: Jump Jets
Thumb Buttons 1 - 3: Fire Weapon Group 3 - 5
Thumb Buttons 4 & 5: Target Overlay, Com Rose
♥♥♥♥♥♥ Hat: Score Board, Battlegrid, Heat Vision, Night Vision
Joystick Forward/Backward for Throttle
Joystick Left/Right for turing
Don't use the twist axis.
The Mad Catz / Saitek Fly 1 is out of production, but the Thrusmaster T 16 000 M is also good.
Try turning the mouse sensitivity down, if you haven't yet. I'm at 35 or 40.
One would think a joystick would be preferable with a fast-moving mech, but in my experience it's just not so. It's something about the pacing and timing due game-mechanics that seem to suit the mouse better. Also the joystick controls seem to be somewhat unoptimized for MWO, with the targeting being very hard to control (especially when unlocking your arms). It's plausible that controller-software like T.A.R.G.E.T. can be used to make the joystick work better, if you have the skill and time. In all, the joystick worked far worse than a mouse for me, and it was a frustrating experience.
The throttle works alot better than the joystick in my experience. However, the game is twitchy enough that the range and motion of both the throttle and legtwisting mini-joystick gained me very little. The keybords 3 throttle-functions "max fwd", "stop", and "max bck" makes for both more precise mech-control and lower reaction times.
In my experience the game-mechanics makes it more of a shooter than a sim what controllers are concerned.
